Pianist Hersch and six-stringer Frisell have created intimate music here. Picture a scene: the two players stroll down the avenue in lively conversation, sometimes talking at the same time, each with his own flurry of commentary on a topic of truly mutual understanding. Now press play on your CD player and listen to the soundtrack.
"Someday My Prince" opens with an exciting air of suspense as Frisell holds a syncopated drone line over Hersch's gentle chords. It glows with melodicism. Full of fun, the duo captures the composer's whimsical spirit well in their treatment of "Blue Monk." Here and elsewhere, Frisell's 2-string ideas are colorful and pungent. Add their take on "Yesterdays" to the ever-growing list of genius interpretations of this Kern tune. While the Sun Ra and Art Tatum versions still shine just as brightly, this one romps like a juicy storybook. A collection of standards full of spontaneity, agility and friendship.
