Jacques Callot Miseres de la Guerre Miseries of War 17th century Plate 16 Over 300 years old engraving! Up for auction from an estate is a 17th century original antique print by Jacques Callot, (French 1592 - 1635). This auction is for one unframed engraving from the series "Miseries and Misfortunes of War" or in French "Miseres de la Guerre". The engravings from the series portray attrocities of the Thirty Year War. This is plate 16 numbered in lower right corner portraying the dying on the sides of the roads ("les mourants sur le bord des routes"). The plate size is approx. 80 x 183 mm. The paper margins are uneven, but this in no way affects the plate and image, which is clear and sharp. Condition: There is overall age browning to the image, extending to where the matting ended when the print was framed. There is no foxing, tearing or creases in the image. The margins have some tears in the far left seen up close and there are losses to the far corners all inconsequential to the plate image. There is some foxing in the margins only and one light water stain in the right margin. There are remnants of tape on the back (reverse) from previous mounting. See photos. It is difficult to capture in photos the exact colors of the image. I took a number of pictures to try and show the image under different light conditions. The colors are generally slightly yellow and the image sharp and nice. This plate will frame and display beautifully, it is a vivid engraving with amazing detail, down to the minute facial expressions. Email if you have questions, I will try my best although I am not an expert in antique prints by any means. I am hoping you collectors and dealers out there will know more about this amazing, well known and collectible work. Shipping and handling will be $7.00 in the US, insurance extra and optional. Shipping abroad will depend on the destination. Over the next weeks, I will be listing a number of other antique prints, including those by Piranesi, Hollar, Schmutzer, Schaufelein, Goltzius, all from the same estate. Sold "as is" unless found significantly misrepresented. I guarantee authenticity unless stated otherwise. PayPal is accepted as form of payment. Do not miss an opportunity to own a very collectible and well known antique print! Thank you for looking at my auction! |
