ANTIQUE 18TH CENTURY CARVED WOOD LATIN AMERICAN SANTOS
HANDSOME 18TH CENTURY LATIN AMERICAN SANTOS
This wonderful Santos represents San Antonio, I believe, with his well-carved and painted tonsure. I hope that you can see his brilliant blue glass eyes and unusual painted eyelashes. The robes are gilded and heavily patinated with dark blue underpaint. As is often the case with Latin American Santos, his removable left hand is missing. Hanging from a thread around his neck is a tiny carved figure that looks like a fetus, perhaps serving as a thanks-milagro for answered petitions. At 9 inches in height a nice example of Spanish Colonial indigenous art, the condition of this artifact is average to good for its age and provenance. It is completely original and has not been cleaned or restored in any way.
