The bust of the king first appeared on the 1911 sovereign and was used up until 1936. The new bust was the work of Edgar Bertram Mackennel, an Australian born in Melbourne in 1863. The reverse for the new coinage was the continuation of Benedetto Pistrucci's St George slaying the dragon. Edgar Bertram Mackennel came to England in 1891 and you will find his initals B.M in relief at the bottom of the truncation. The new mint in Pretoria South Africa was to open officially on the 1st of January 1923, but because of delays erecting the machinery and equipping the various departments, coining was not possible until sometime later that year. Once minted the coins were put on ships and put in vaults in the Bank of England as part of are reserve and sadly many sovereign were melted in 1929 and 1930.
