This offering is a mix of paperbacks and hardcovers. (See below) From one of Fantasy's shining lights comes this first volume in a magnificent epic set in a richly realized land and culture where bloody rebellion may soon destroy the kingdom, while sorcerous confrontations and the secret workings of an otherworldly race could transform the very land into a place in which no mortal was ever meant to dwell. It begins with the threat of civil war. For though King Henry still holds the crown of Wendar, his reign has long been contested by his sister Sabella. There are many eager to flock to her banner, whether from their belief in her cause or the hope of personal gain. And there are ways to bring others under her command, methods to make even the most unwilling lord into a weapon pointed at the very heart of Henry's realm. Torn by internal strife, Wendar also faces deadly raids from the north by an inhuman race, the Eika, and from the east by the "winged" riders, the Qumans. And terrifying portents are being seen by many; old ruins restored to life under the light of the full moon and peopled by the long vanished Lost Ones; dark spirits walking the land in broad daylight. And suddenly two innocents - Alain, a young man who may find his future in a vision granted by the Lady of Battles, and Liath, a young woman with the power to change the course of history if she can only learn to master her fear and seize what is rightfully hers - are about to be thrust into the midst of the conflict. Prince of Dogs returns readers to the war-torn kingdoms of Wendar and Varre, and to the intertwined destinies of: Alain, raised in humble surroundings but now the Courts heir; Laith, who struggles to unravel the secrets of her past while evading the traps set for her by those seeking the treasure she hides; Sanglat, believed dead by those who could save him, but actually a prisoner in the city of Gent; and Fifth Brother, who now builds an army to do his father's - or his own - bidding in a world at war! In the epic sequel to King's Dragon and Prince of Dogs, outcast lovers Liath and Sanglant flee King Henry's camp, only to discover that they must choose between the powerful demands of politics, forbidden knowledge, and family, as the time approaches when the lands of Aoi and human will once again be united. In the sequel to The Burning Stone, Alain becomes caught in the middle of an ancient conflict between humankind and the Cursed Ones, while Liath is kidnapped by strange alien creatures and forced into a difficult trial in a land of exile, and Sanglant, mourning the loss of his wife, Liath, struggles to warn King Henry of a deadly conspiracy of sorcerers. Finally finding her way back from the land of Aoi, Liath, burdened with the knowledge that a cataclysmic event is on the horizon, returns to Sanglant only to discover that she has been gone for four years, while Alian finds his life in the hands of the Eika leader Stronghand, who decides to save him from a terrible fate. After tsunamis, earthquakes, and firestorms ravage the earth, a dying king's wish sets in motion a chain of events that pits the survivors of this devastation against each other, and their only hope in lifting the darkness and restoring peace to the world is to find the forbidden magic. In this seventh and final volume of the "Crown of Stars" series cultures, religions, and races battle for control of the new world that finds the Aoi carrying out random attacks, Sanglant struggling to legitimize his own leadership, Adelheid and Antonia making an unholy alliance, and Sabell and Duke Conrad attempting to seize Sanglant's crown. All volumes have been read twice and the paperbacks show some minor wear but I would still list them as Very Good. The hardcovers are in Like New condition. |
