This is a 17th century Nurnburg Jetton by Hans Krauwinkle (circa 1587-1635). It is about the size of a quarter but quite thin. These were tokens not real coins. Most interestingly many have been recently excavated in Jamestown identical to this one. Many were traded to the native Americans for their copper ornamental value. They have been found cut up and pierced for decoration. This is a nice excavated one with good patina. Postage in the US is $1. |
