Avoiding the fate of many guitar-driven '90s peers that succumbed to the onslaught on bubble-gum acts and fickle music tastes, Better Than Ezra rebounded in 2001 with CLOSER after parting ways with Elektra Records following the release of 1998's HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? Continuing to traffic in the same kind of smart, mature pop that's become their trademark, this New Orleans trio updates its sound by inviting DJ Swamp along for the ride on a few cuts. The result is the slide guitar/turntable-scratching hybrid "Recognize" that brings to mind Beck, and the irresistibly rollicking first single "Extra Ordinary."
Throughout, frontman/guitarist Kevin Griffin's distinctive drawl adds warmth to songs like the ethereal "Juarez," soulful "Get You In," and "A Lifetime," which manages to combine restrained strings, mellotron, references to R.E.M., and nifty dynamic changes on a gorgeous ode to love. Although, the boys from BTE do cut loose and convincingly rock their way through the fuzz-guitar-driven "I Do" and Weezer-flavored "Sincerely, Me," their best moments come on mid-tempo songs like the stream-of-consciousness title track. MISUNDERSTOOD reaffirms guitar-driven alt-pop is still alive in the era of boy bands and teen ingenues.
