Wonderful circa 1935-1950 original oil on canvas by early California artist, Antoon (Anthony) Heinsbergen. Courtesy of Edan Hughes:
A painter, Antoon Heinsbergen was born in Holland on Dec. 13, 1894. He immigrated to Los Angeles as a small boy. After studying at Chouinard and Otis Art Institutes, he was sought after as a decorator of theaters. With a crew of 185, he painted wall and ceiling decorations in 757 theaters in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Using bricks from the old Los Angeles City Hall, he built a miniature castle on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood to house his company. In his leisure he painted portraits, landscapes, and figure studies. He died in Los Angeles on June 14, 1981. Collection: Orinda (California) Theater; Orpheum Theater (San Francisco); Bowers Museum (Santa Ana). & Interview, City Directory and Death Record. Measuring an voerall aprox. 26 x 24, this piece is ready to hang. The artwork is in very good condition with only minor wear from age. The solid wood plein air style frame is also in very good condition with no apparent problems, losses, or repairs. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was fortunate enough to see several of Heinsbergers larger works in the Orinda Theater as well as the Orpheum in San Francisco. Both have eloborate deco era murals that line the walls and ceiling. Truly remarkable works. I purchased this piece from a San Francisco auction house that was deaccessioning several pieces from an early California art collection.
