I LOVE THIS PIECE!! shows the change of the seasons. Beautifully handpainted. The plate edge is accented in gold. The plate is
in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There very little gold
wear. The back is backstamped as shown. Magnificent. Hand painted with no condition issues! Measures 81/2” in diameter. In
America, by the turn of the 20th century, painting on porcelain had become a
cottage industry for more than 25,000 talented artists, most of them women who
were not allowed to achieve professional status in that era. The technique
known as the standard method of painting became popular in the late 1800s and
early 1900s. This technique utilizes the translucency of china paint to create
depth and highlight. Background is used to the advantage on these pieces.
Color, reflection, shadow and shapes can all be included in the background to
add interest and new dimensions to our painting. The entire piece is painted,
with the background color ranging from a very light wash to a very dark color.
The design is then painted on freehand or by tracing, and the background is
worked in around the design. It is the painting followed by the firing process,
with subsequent painting and firing, that gives the porcelain its highlights
and a three-dimensional look. The majority of the amateur American china
painters were those women who were allowed creative occupations, and those who
considered it a hobby. Woman played significant roles in the birth of the
china-painting movement in America. Ohme
mainly produced full dinner sets which were available in two distinct types of
porcelain. The 'Clear Glaze' type, decorated with a wide variety of floral and
geometric patterns, was produced for the European and the U.S. market; it was
also the most produced type as it was also sold as undecorated (or 'blank')
porcelain in great numbers. After the initial firings, the various floral and
other designs, including hand painting, are then added and the piece is fired
again at a relatively low temperature. To date, approximately fifty different
blanks have been identified that were produced by the Ohme factory. |
