Review
"God knows how our boys in the trenches have had to suffer, especially in the winter with the cold and the mud and not the right kind of food for this weather. The summer is not so bad, but it is the time when so many of our boys are laid away in their last resting place. Gone, but not forgotten. That is the time when it makes one think that war isn't worth the sacrifice, when we go from town to town and see the soldiers' cemetery on the hill or in the valley, and filled with little mounds and a small cross at the head with the words, 'Here lies the body of some mother's son who died doing his duty. Rest in peace.' Then I say, no war!"

Bert Cooke

Product Description
Part of Vanwell's Voices of War series, We're Not Dead Yet is a firsthand account of the experiences of Herbert Bryant "Bert" Cooke, a soldier in 75th Canadian Battalion in France and Belgium during the First World War. Cooke's diaries of reveal the day-to-day fear, horror, and fatigue that wore down even the most courageous men. The difficult years between 1915 and 1919 are measured in miles marched by the troops through harsh weather conditions and under enemy fire. Cooke's diaries offer a fresh perspective on the brutality and heroism of war.

What you will read about:

  • The months of grueling training at Bramshott Camp-England.
  • The cramped and unsanitary conditons aboard train and ship with thousands of other soldiers.
  • The unspeakable horrors of trench warfare.
  • The devastating effects of the war on the people of Europe (specifically France & Belgium), their homes, their property, in Bert's own words- with keen detail.
  • In his diary entries and letters, he ponders the logic of war and the people who suffer the consequences of it.
