Original Rare 19th Century Hand Blown Glass Leech Jar With attached Stem. The jar would have had a pierced parchment or cheesecloth cover bound over the top, (thus the rounded lip for a string to hold in place). The Jar would possibly also have contained damp moss and/or water. Plainer Leech Jars were kept at the back of apothecary shops, (as opposed to highly decorated ceramic, lidded, bowl type containers, which were placed on show in shop windows, and on sideboards etc.). Leeches have 3 jaws (triradiate), each with 65 teeth and this bite leaves a wound like a triradiate star. Due to the injection of hirudin by the leech in order to maintain bloodflow, the wound will keep bleeding for up to 12 hours. You can see in the photos in which I used a flash the striations of the glass blowing process caused by turning the jar as the glass blower to form the round shape. These only show up under flash. Quite facinating I think. A must have for the medical oddities collector. Would make a great conversation piece or a great Goldfish bowl.
