Synopsis
After a hiatus of more than three years, Mystery Grandmaster Lawrence Block returns to his series about Matt Scudder, a former cop with a difficult, painful past who became a private investigator. In this 16th installment, a woman whom Scudder met at an AA meeting asks him to investigate a dubious-seeming guy she met over the Internet. As Scudder pursues the case, he realizes that he's on the trail of a killer--the same killer from the previous Scudder novel, HOPE TO DIE--and that both he and his wife Elaine are potential victims.

Publisher's Note

In his sixteenth Matthew Scudder novel, All the Flowers Are Dying, New York Times bestselling author Lawrence Block takes the award-winning series to a new level of suspense and a new depth of characterization. Building on the critical and commercial success of Hope to Die, Block puts Scudder -- and the reader -- at the very edge of the abyss.

Scudder, a complex character who has grown and aged in real time, confronts the implacable challenge of mortality. But he must also tackle a determined, relentless, and icily inhuman adversary, perhaps the most unforgettable villain Block has ever created.

A man in a Virginia prison awaits execution for three hideous murders he swears, in the face of irrefutable evidence, he did not commit. A psychologist who claims to believe the convict spends hours with the man in his death row cell, and ultimately watches in the gallery as the lethal injection is administered. His work completed, the psychologist heads back to New York City to attend to unfinished business.

Meanwhile, Scudder has just agreed to investigate the ostensibly suspicious online lover of an acquaintance. It seems simple enough. At first. But when people start dying and the victims are increasingly closer to home, it becomes clear that a vicious killer is at work. And the final targets may be Matt and Elaine Scudder.

The suspense is breathtaking, the outcome never certain. A series that has garnered no end of awards -- the Edgar, the Shamus, the Philip Marlowe, the MalteseFalcon -- has ascended to a dizzying new height. With this novel, Lawrence Block, who recently received the Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement from the Crime Writers Association of the United Kingdom, is at the very top of his form.

Industry reviews
"Another powerful meditation on mortality in thriller's clothing."
Kirkus  (01/15/2005)

"[S]tellar....[A] thrilling, satisfying concoction brewed by a master storyteller in top form." (starred review)
Publishers Weekly  (02/14/2005)

"[T]he heart of the book is in New York City. Mr. Block writes about it with great affection and involving, believable detail."
New York Times - Janet Maslin (03/10/2005)

"Scudder is back after a four-year absence...more melancholy and more endearing than ever."
New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (03/13/2005)

"[Even if Block] bangs out series thrillers almost as faster than you can read them, no one would dream of calling him a hack--his stuff is just too damn readable, not to mention addictive....[ALL THE FLOWERS ARE DYING is] a particularly strong effort."
Entertainment Weekly - Tom Sinclair (02/25/2005)

Shipping History:

We have shipped well over 3,000 packages (containing more than 5,700 items), with more than 500 of those packages going to international destinations, since we started selling on in 2002 (Click here to see where we've shipped). As of September 16, 2009, we have had only five packages reported as lost, three to U.S. destinations and two to international destinations (Australia and Spain - destinations we have also shippped to successfully many times). We have not had a report of a book damaged in transit since shortly after we started selling (it took us a couple of damaged shipments to learn not to pack books in boxes that were too tight a fit).

California Sales Tax

Items shipped to addresses outside California are not subject to sales tax.

Unless you are a reseller with a valid California Seller's Permit buying this item to resell, we are required by California law to collect sales tax for all items shipped to or delivered to addresses in California or picked up from our location.

The checkout system cannot handle the complexities of sales tax in California where the sales tax rate varies by where the item is being delivered. We have setup the shipping calculator to charge sales tax at 9.5% for those who do not want to wait for us to invoice you. If you wait for our invoice, we will adjust the sales tax to be correct for the location you say we will be shipping to.

California resellers need to provide us with your permit number before we can remove the sales tax from your invoice.
