Synopsis
Author and musicologist Phil Rose discusses the Pink Floyd's recorded works from 1973's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON to 1983's THE FINAL CUT with ex-band member Roger Waters in WHICH ONE'S PINK?, an erudite and closely argued survey of the albums with which Waters is most closely identified. Waters's lyrical imagery provides much food for thought, and Rose's examination of songs like "Pigs on the Wing Part 1" and "Dogs" from 1977's ANIMALS finds the songwriter at his bitter and anti-societal best. It's perhaps no coincidence that ANIMALS was released around the time of Britain's punk rock upheaval; although the band was musically no match for the spitting intensity of punk, its lyrics, though perhaps less bile-filled than those of Johnny Rotten or Joe Strummer, betray a deep-seated dissatisfaction with the status quo. Between them, Rose and Waters, in a series of intellectually riveting exchanges, slowly tease out the meanings and inspirations behind albums like 1979's THE WALL and 1975's WISH YOU WERE HERE, along the way eliciting some revealing commentary on Waters' jaundiced worldview.
