Cartoons from the Daily Express by Strube. A Daily Express Production, 1947. Printed by Alabaster, Passmore & Sons, Ltd. London. Cartoons are dated from 30th October 1944 thru June 13th, 1947. There are 160 pages in the collection, with a full page drawing on each page. The color cover features Winston Churchill and Clement Atlee selling flowers under the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. This example is in excellent condition; both covers are still attached and there is only slight wear on the binding. There is no rust from the staples. Sidney Strube was the editorial cartoonist of the London Daily Express between 1912 and 1948. During these years, he assisted in making the Daily Express the best selling national newspaper in the world. During the 1930s, Strube’s ridiculing of Hitler and Mussolini led the Daily Express to being banned in Germany and Italy. Strube’s name, alongside many other prominent critics of Hitler’s regime, was discovered on a Nazi hit list after the war. |
