A brief History of the sixpence :- The sixpence was first introduced 1551.  It quickly became a very popular coin.  Silver has always been regarded as "lucky" And had the power to keep evil spirits and suchlike away. Particularly in times of importance in peoples lives. Birthdays, Weddings particularly, Christmas (Sixpence in the Christmas pud', New Year, Halloween, Births etc. etc..  At times of Marriage for example it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give the Bride from the Estate a SILVER present. This became the traditional custom of giving the Bride a SILVER sixpence for her Slipper to wear on her Wedding Day. Sixpences were minted in Fine Silver, changing to .500 fine in 1920 and to Cupro Nickel in 1947. They were then minted and in general circulation until that dreaded day in 1967.
