Title:
Modern Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture
Property from the Estate of Sidney E Cohn

Description:
The Sidney E Cohn Collection:
That Sidney E Cohn was a truly serious collector is evident from the selections of works from his Estate to be offered here. It is a collection of distinctive character, composed mainly of works on paper but including also several paintings and fine bronzes.
During the course of a fifty-year career as a lawyer in New York City, Sidney Cohn played a prominent role in the labor movement and was instrumental in organizing workers in a wide variety of industries and protecting the worker’s right to strike. In the 1940s and 1950s Mr. Cohn also represented numerous people in the entertainment business who were forced to appear before Congressional committees during the McCarthy anti-communist hearings. He subsequently became one of the country’s leading entertainment attorneys.
The Cohn Collection also includes Cubist and non-Cubist works by American artists, including a 1910 gouache on board by Max Weber, Soloist at Wanamakers, which will be offered on May 27, 1992 (shown in the back of this catalog) and fine prints, including one of the finest Lissitzky’s Proun compositions from 1923, and two of Jacques Villon’s most important Belle Epoque aquatints, which are to be offered in the print sale of May 14-16, 1992 (1 shown in the back of this catalog).
