Lutein and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

At the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2009 Annual Meeting, results from a UK study sponsored by Bausch and Lomb found that

“Lutein, Zeaxanthin Supplements May Result in Better Macular Function in Early AMD”.

“The study suggests that supplementation with lutein results in better macular function in patients with early AMD," said Dr. Chakravarthy. "And as the eyes of persons who had high serum [lutein] demonstrated a less severe early AMD change over time, supplementation may prove beneficial in preventing progression to late AMD.

As up to now there are no cure for Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), attention has been focused to supplements which can prevent and delay this degeneration progress.

Progress of macula degeneration also has been proven to be closely related to lack of macula pigments which consist of lutein and zeaxanthin.
