A Hole is to Dig: A First Book of Definitions was written by Ruth Krauss, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, and published by Harper & Brothers in 1952. A still entertaining and poetic book, this was one of Sendak's first real successes and first editions in dust jacket can bring some serious change. Identifying a first printing is relatively easy: the bottom illustration on page 21 (or so...they're unnumbered) lacks the word "G-rr-r-r. This copy has a light blue spine and was issued by Harper & Brothers (rather than the later Harper & Row), but has the "Grr-r-r"; a relatively early issue. Simple definitions for everyday items ("A package is to look into." "Snow is to roll in." "Cats are so you can have kittens.") with dynamic illustrations. In Fine condition, but lacking the dust jacket.
