Gustave Dore Bible Print Lazarus at the Rich Mans Gate

This wonderful original circa 1890 Gustave Dore print is supplied in a lovely white mount ready for framing (as per picture). The dimensions of the mount are 10 inches wide by 12 Inches high or 25cm x 30.5cm.

LAZARAS AT THE RICH MAN'S GATE

THE STORY OF DIVES AND LAZARUS IS ILLUSTRATED IN THIS PLATE, AT THE POINT WHERE LAZARU DESIRES TO BE FED WITH THE CRUMBS WHICH FALL FROM THE RICH MAN'S TABLE (LUKE XVI. 19-21). "THERE WAS A CERTAIN RICH MAN, WHICH WAS CLOTHED IN PURPLE AND FINE LINEN, AND FARED SUMPTUOUSLY EVERY DAY. AND THERE WAS A CERTAIN BEGGAR NAMED LAZARUS, WHICH WAS LAID AT HIS GATE, FULL OF SORES, AND DESIRING TO BE FED WITH THE CRUMBS WHICH FELL FROM THE RICH MAN'S TABLE; MOEOVER, THE DOGS CAME AND LICKED HIS SORES." AT TEH TOP OF A FLIGHT OF STEPS, IN A MAGNIFICENT SALOON DIVIDED BY PILLARS OF ORIENTAL ARCHITECTURE, SITS DIVES, SPLENDIDLY ARRAYED, AND SURROUNDED BY PARASITES AND FLAUNTING WOMEN, WHO RAISE THEIR CHALICES OF WINE IN HONOUR OF THE GREAT MAN. A FEMALE SERVANT, DESCENDING THE STEPS WITH A STEAMING VESSEL ON HER HEAD, CASTS A COLD UNSYMPATHETIC GLANCE ON THE WRETCHED MENDICANT LYING AT THE BOTTOM, WITH UPTURNED FACEOF BESEECHING MISERY. A BLACK SLAVE, WITH AN AMPHORA, OR WINE-JAR, ON HIS SHOULDER, STERNLY MOTIONS LAZARUS TO DEPART; WHLE ANOTHER ATTENDANT THREATENS HIM WITH A ROD AND HIS CLENCHED FIST. INSOLENT WEALTH AND HELPLESS POVERY ARE MOST POWERLLY AND PATHETICALLY CONTRASTED IN THIS ADMIRABLE PICTURE.

These wonderful prints would make a lovely holy Christmas or birthday gift mounted in a frame of your choosing (NOT included in the sale), or would be at home in an ecclesiastical setting such as a Church or Chapel. They really are something to treasure and pass down through the family.

I would imagine these would also be of interest to bible study groups to bring added meaning and understanding to Our Lords word.
