[PLOT SUMMARY]
DESCRIPTION:
Grotus are one weird band. Yeah, I know that's our bread and butter, and there's a constant flow of eccentric heavy bands floating through Crucial Blast HQ on a daily basis, but this 1993 album from Grotus had me at a loss for words the first time that I gave it a spin. Much like their Alt Tentacles labelmates Ex-Girl, Grotus were an older band that I had heard about for ages but hadn't actually heard until now, primarily after being prodded by J.R. from Public Guilt to check 'em out.
Most of the San Francisco band's releases have been long out of print, but Slow Motion Apocalypse is still available, at least for the moment. This was the one album that the band recorded for Alternative Tentacles before they were snatched up by major label London Records in the post-Nirvana alternative signing frenzy of the early 90's, and Grotus are one of those 90's bands that actually seemed like they might have gotten big, like really big, touring a couple of times with Mr. Bungle and even supporting Korn on their first headlining tour. But they ended up biting the dust later in the decade after their album and remix EP for London failed to catch on, causing them to be dropped from the label. Listening to the freaky, vaguely psychedelic industrial rock on Slow Motion Apocalypse, it's not too hard to see why these guys didn't take the mainstream rock populace by storm...their music, while quite catchy, is still pretty goddamn weird, an almost uncatagorizeable blend of sample-heavy industrial, dub, grooving noise rock, and metal delivered with arcane, politically charged lyrics, ethnic instruments like Indian tablas and sitars, two bassists, and two drummers, which gave 'em a pretty hefty bottom-end heaviness. To be honest, the music on Slow Motion Apocalypse does sound of it's time, when Wax Trax and heavy industrial rock still sounded somewhat edgy, but their bizarre sampling and visions of social unrest are actually kind of reminiscent of what Negativland was doing, and the ethnic instrumentation, hypnotic riffing, and droning electronics all make Grotus far more interesting and experimental than most of the other bands that were combining samplers and heavy riffs at the time. Actually, they remind me of a trippier, more experimental version of later Cop Shoot Cop. I'm glad I finally checked this out, it's a pretty cool dose of early '90s alternative heaviness that is one of the stranger albums that I've heard so far from the Alternative Tentacles back catalog.
