IT'S LIKE THIS was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
Though Rickie Lee Jones began her career as a highly idiosyncratic singer-songwriter, this album finds her taking on a slightly different role that began in earnest with her POP POP album; that of the interpreter. IT'S LIKE THIS consists entirely of cover tunes, all delivered in that unmistakably unique Jones style. She takes on material from several different eras of pop music here, and is to be credited for the breadth of her vision. She sounds equally at home delivering quirky, stripped-down versions of standards ("I Can't Get Started," "Someone to Watch over Me") or digging into the sleazy jazz-funk of Steely Dan ("Show Biz Kids"). Along the way, she renders a poignant version of the Beatles ballad "For No One," gets jazzy on Traffic's FM radio staple "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," and reinvents Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," a tune which has also been taken on (not insignificantly) by Jones' influence Joni Mitchell.
