DESCRIPTION:
Released in 2007, The Cult Of Young Men is a crushing dose of cold-blooded, murderous Joy Division-worshipping death industrial from Sweden that features Erik Jarl (aka Jarl) along with Martin Bladh. I've been a fan of Jarl's work since discovering him through his album on Malignant, and fans of the Cold Meat sound and the really malevolent, evil end of the dark ambient spectrum should seek out anything that he's involved with. With IRM, Jarl and Bladh
explore extreme themes of bodily destruction and the utter annihilation of youth through the sickening images of corroded male bodies that are featured in the album artwork, and the array of crushing industrial drones and catatonic machine rhythms featured on tracks like "Here Are The Young Men", "Stage Of Crucifixion" and "Rent Boy". The music on Cult Of The Young Men is primarily made up of cold, desolate dronescapes made up of heavy industrial textures and looped motifs of jet-black isolationist drone, very unsettling and creepy and not unlike some of the stuff on Cold Meat Industry or the more ambient releases on Malignant, but IRM add a power electronics element to them with pissed-off, hateful vocals that are yelled over the inhospitable drones, reminding me of Sutcliffe Jugend or Prurient mixed with thick orchestral hellscrape. The eight tracks range from massive blocks of symphonic thrum and series of deep bass pulses that throb in the background almost like a super minimal techno beat, to static harmonium-like drones, swells of abrasive, metallic ambience and distorted low-end buzz that borders on doomdrone, distant feedback drones howling in the blackness like air-raid sirens, crushing, super-distorted subsonic factorygrind, huge pieces of metal and machinery crashing and clanking against each other, and hovering drone-tones of what sound like a brass section blowing a single note for eternity. Heavy, evil industrial deathdrone, recommended to anyone into Brighter Death Now, Jarl, Atrax Morgue, Folkstorm, Prurient and Sutcliffe Jugend. Limited to 900 copies.
