Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition (64 bit) is designed for the pervasively connected digital lifestyle. With new 3G network support, users can move smoothly
from wired and WiFi networks onto 3G cellphone networks while traveling. Ubuntu 8.10 is also built to be shared - users can
start a quick "guest session" on the fly and let someone use their computer to surf the web or check email, while maintaining
the security and integrity of their own data. And if that person really enjoys their brief session as an Ubuntu guest, they can
put Ubuntu on any USB key and take it home to install on their own computer rather than having to burn a CD.
"Ubuntu 8.10 sees us lay the groundwork for a radically different, more mobile, desktop computing environment over the next two years,"
says Jane Silber, COO of Canonical and head of Online Services for Canonical. "Our rapid release cycle means we can deliver the elements
to support this future faster, more fully realised, and more attractively packaged than the traditional OS vendors. Ubuntu 8.10 has many
features that sign-post how Linux will provide the drive and innovation in desktop computing."

"Working with open source technologies like GNOME, Ubuntu 8.10 provides exciting new features for users like creating an always-on system that
seamlessly connects wireless and cellular networks," said Stormy Peters, executive director at the GNOME Foundation. "Users no longer need to
worry about finding a network - their computer is always connected. This is a great step for both mobile and desktop computing."

The openSUSE Project is proud to announce the release of openSUSE 11.1 64. The openSUSE 11.1 release includes more than 230 new features, improvements to YaST, major updates to GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, and more freedom with a brand new license, Liberation fonts, and openJDK. This is also the first release built entirely in the openSUSE Build Service.

On the Desktop
Desktop users will find a lot to like in this release. Users can choose from the leading edge of GNOME and KDE development with GNOME 2.24.1 and KDE 4.1.3. We’ve also included KDE 3.5.10 for users who prefer the classic KDE experience.
What’s new in GNOME 2.24.1?

GNOME has gotten a good set of improvements since the 11.0 release. GNOME 2.24.1 features tabbed browsing and a new compact view in Nautilus, improvements for Gmail users in Evolution, along with mail templates, a new version of Ekiga, and additional improvements in F-Spot.
This release also includes a brand-new release of the ever-popular Banshee. Banshee 1.4 sports support for Internet radio, compilation albums, a Now Playing window for video and audio, support for syncing to Android phones, and many other features that make Banshee an excellent multimedia player for the Linux desktop.

What’s new in KDE 4.1.3?
KDE 4 has a huge number of improvements since openSUSE 11.0. In this release you’ll find the KDE-PIM suite back in KDE 4, new games, the KSCD CD player, KSystemLog to keep track of system changes, improvements to Dolphin, Konqueror, and Marble integration with OpenStreetMap. KDE has now standardized on PackageKit for its backend, which means both desktops are using the same update stack.

Fedora is a center for innovation in free and open source software, and creates a community where developers and open source
enthusiasts come together to advance free and open source software. The Fedora community contributes everything it builds back
to the free and open source world and continues to make advances of significance to the broader community, as evidenced by the
regular and rapid incorporation of its features into other Linux distributions. Regardless of which Linux distribution you use,
you are relying on code developed within the Fedora Project.

Major features for Fedora 10 (64 bit)
* Wireless connection sharing enables ad hoc network sharing
* Better setup and use of printers through improved management tools
* Virtualization storage provisioning for local and remote connections now simplified
* SecTool is a new security audit and intrusion detection system
* RPM 4.6 is a major update to the powerful, flexible software management libraries
Other interesting features in Fedora 10
* Glitch free audio and better performance is achieved through a rewrite of the PulseAudio sound server to use timer-based audio scheduling
* Improved webcam support
* Better support for infrared remote controls makes them easier to connect and work with many applications
* The paths /usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin have been added to the PATH for normal users, to simplify command-line administration tasks
* The online account service provides applications with credentials for online accounts listed on online.gnome.org or stored in GConf

Sabayon Linux is an operating system powered by the Linux kernel and GNU. There are many Linux flavors, but most geeks
just call them distributions. We are a Linux distribution, though, and try to provide our users the best and most complete computing experience.
Our philosophy follows two simple statements:
A) OOTB (out of the box) Functionalities: There should be no problems and everything should "just work."
B) KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid!
Moreover, to achieve this, Sabayon Linux uses Gentoo Linux as its base. It is (and always will be)
100% compatible with it. We are one of the most scalable distributions and are happy to support everyone
from the most creative kernel hacker to the newbie. How? Because of point A above, and because Gentoo Linux
is THE most extensible Linux distribution, no one can say anything to the contrary.

* Sabayon offers a complete out-of-the-box experience, it comes with pre-installed media codecs, drivers, and games.
* New versions are released in a short amount of time. This means that you don't have to go through the headaches of updating
by hand to the latest and greatest software available. Also, you don't have to fiddle around with updates, making this distribution
that much easier.
* Unlike most other distributions, it's completely independent from commercial interests. No big firm stands
behind Sabayon Linux and dictates what it should do. The developers of Sabayon Linux are all users from other
Distributions, so they started to make a distribution "from users for users".

New in Kubuntu 8.10 2009
This release includes significant new versions of many key components and technologies.
The following sections provide a brief overview of major changes from the last release of Kubuntu.
Kubuntu is a user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment.
With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu is the
GNU/Linux distribution for everyone.
Kubuntu and Ubuntu are not meant to be seen as distinct projects; Kubuntu is part of
the Ubuntu project, and they are both part of one development team that contributes to the whole.
Kubuntu is Ubuntu with a different default setup, the Ubuntu CD contains only GNOME
as a desktop environment; the Kubuntu CD contains only KDE, this is the primary difference.

Desktop Management
The K Desktop Environment, a powerful graphical desktop environment, combines the ease of use,
contemporary functionality and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority
of the Kubuntu operating system. The stable release of KDE in Kubuntu 8.10 is right up to date.

Dolphin File Management System
Dolphin is a KDE file manager, now the default file manager in Kubuntu 8.10, which allows quick navigation
through the file system. Dolphin is not a replacement for Konqueror as Dolphin only acts as a file manager.
Some of the main features of Dolphin are: a navigation bar for quick navigation through the file system,
view properties are saved for each folder, split views, undo and redo functionality, renaming of multiple
selected items in one easy step.

WinFOSS - Windows Free Software
Not only can you use Kubuntu and install Kubuntu from the Desktop CD or the DVD, but you also have
some popular Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) available to install on your Microsoft Windows operating system.
Advantages of this software include being absolutely free of charge, being free to modify and being free to
copy and distribute. The applications provided are: Scribus, an advanced desktop publishing utility; Mozilla Firefox,
a secure and fast web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird, a full-featured email client - reclaim your inbox!

KDE 4
KDE 4, the largest update to ever come out of the KDE community, is present in the Kubuntu 8.04
universe repositories. KDE 4 is the version available released only the day before Kubuntu 8.04.
Still recommended only for the developer minded as it is highly unstable, however it is getting to the
point of much better usability. If you are interested in seeing how the future of desktop computing is
shaping up, then take a look at our KDE 4.

Server Support
The Ubuntu server edition builds on the functionality from the previous release simplifying common
Linux server deployments. Included is a major virtualisation support initiative. On x86 systems
with the Intel VT or AMD-V extensions, Kernel-based Virtual Machine support (KVM) allows users
to run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux. Each virtual machine has private
virtualised hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter and so on. Also included is VMI
support which provides optimised performance under VMWare. Server packages are available for
installation from the Kubuntu DVD as well as the Ubuntu Server CD.

OpenOffice (MS Office replacement)
OpenOffice is the most popular Linux office suite. It includes word processing, spreadsheet functionality,
an HTML editor, presentation and drawing tools, and a database application. The current edition of OpenOffice
is a significantly enhanced version of the open source productivity suite. It includes improved Microsoft-Office-file
compatibility and integration with Novell Evolution and Kontact. Among the newest features are a new multipane view,
enhanced PDF exporting, a mail-merge Wizard, an improved word-count feature, floating toolbars and much more.
