Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) - originally published as Alice's Adventures Under Ground. The story centers on the seven-year-old Alice, who falls asleep in a meadow, and dreams that she plunges down a rabbit hole. She finds herself first too large and then too small. She meets such strange characters as Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts, and experiences wondrous, often bizarre adventures, trying to reason in numerous discussions that do not follow the daylight logic. Finally she loses her temper, bringing down this dream world and wakes up.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work of children's literature by the British mathematician and author Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by talking creatures and anthropomorphic playing cards.

The tale is fraught with satirical allusions to Dodgson's friends and to the lessons that British schoolchildren were expected to memorize. The Wonderland described in the tale plays with logic in ways that has made the story of lasting popularity with children as well as grown-ups."

Alice was first published on July 4, 1865, exactly three years after Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat up the River Thames with three little girls:
Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13) ("Prima" in the book's prefatory verse)
Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10) ("Secunda" in the prefatory verse)
Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8) ("Tertia" in the prefatory verse)

The journey had started at Follie Bridge near Oxford, England and ended five miles away in a village of Godstow. To while away time the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that, not so coincidentally, featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure.

The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He eventually did so and in February 1863 gave Alice the first manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground. This original script was probably destroyed later by Dodgson himself when he printed a more elaborate copy by hand, illustrated it, and presented it to Alice as a Christmas present on 26 November 1864 (Gardner, 1965).

He also gave a copy of Alice's Adventures Under Ground to his friend and mentor George MacDonald, whose children loved it. On MacDonald's advice, Dodgson decided to submit Alice for publication. He expanded the 18,000-word manuscript to 35,000 words, most notably adding the episodes about the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Tea-Party. In 1865, Dodgson's tale was published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by "Lewis Carroll" with illustrations by John Tenniel. The first print run of 2,000 was shelved because Tenniel had objections over the print quality; a new edition, released in December of the same year but carrying an 1866 date, was quickly printed.

The entire print run sold out quickly. Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike, and it has never been out of print since. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into over 50 languages, including Esperanto. There have now been over a hundred editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theater and film (see below).

Arthur Rackham was born in 1867 into a Victorian age that he perpetuated and documented by way of his art. He was one of twelve children. He studied at the City of London School where he won prizes and a reputation for his art. At the age of 18, he became a clerk and in his spare time studied at the Lambeth School of Art. He made occasional sales to the illustrated magazines of the day like Scraps and Chums. In 1891 and 1892, he had a close association with the Pall Mall Budget as one of this weekly's main illustrative reporters. He was competent.

His first book illustrations were published in 1893 and they were mostly reused images from magazines or books featuring the work of several illustrators (Tales of a Traveler is one such). The first book with illustrations done specifically on commission was in 1896. Nineteen more book assignments followed during the 1890's, with dozens of pictures for two major children's magazines: Cassell's and Little Folks and even one for the venerable St. Nicholas. His second book was In the Evening of His Days. A Study of Mr Gladstone in Retirement, his third Bracebridge Hall by Washington Irving. His fourth and sixth were The Money-Spinner and other Character Notes and Captain Castle. A Tale of the China Seas. He did another boy's adventure book titled Charles O'Malley, The Irish Dragoon, and several books on English Gardens and hunting and fishing. Not really the stuff of fantasy and fairy tales, but there was The Ingoldsby Legends in 1898 (with 12 color plates and 80 line drawings) and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm in 1900 (with a color frontispiece and 95 pen & ink drawings). By far his greatest efforts were being expended in the service of fantasy - at least if you only count quantity. The Ingoldsby Legends.

From 1900 to 1904, it was pretty much more of the same: gardens, golf, cricket, bird watching, farming, shooting, Two Years Before the Mast, and several boy's books like Mysteries of Police and Crime, The Argonauts of the Amazon, and Brains and Bravery. While the subject matter remained fairly constant, Rackham was developing a style that was not only his own, but was to influence a generation of children and artists. The roots of the style were surely evident in many of the books listed above, but the flowering took place in 1905 in a stunning edition of the old Washington Irving classic, Rip Van Winkle.

Most obvious, in retrospective, is the calm and good humor of the drawings. They seem imbued with a gentle joy that must have been reassuring to both the children and their parents. Rackham had found his niche. His drawings would convey a non-threatening yet fearful thrill and a beauty that was in no way overtly sexy or lewd. It was a perfect Victorian solution and he seems to have taken to it with an impish delight.

To touch on just few of the literally dozens of highlights of a long and successful career, Rip was followed in 1906 by one of his two masterpieces, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, another 50-plate extravaganza - this from Hodder and Stoughton. A great sample of his foreboding trees is at left - from Peter Pan.

1907 saw an edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from Heinemann. J.M. Dent reissued Ingoldsby and Constable & Co. Grimm, both in revised, updated editions. "Rackham" was a marketable commodity and everybody wanted one of the golden eggs. It appears that Heinemann won the goose, though. In rapid succession, amid a wealth of other books (some minor, some important), they published four books intended for adults: in 1908 - A Midsummer-Night's Dream (which I classify as his second masterpiece); in 1909 - Undine; in 1910 and 1911 The Rhinegold and the Valkyrie and Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods. These four books contained 115 color plates from Rackham's paintings and all of my favorite Rackham images are contained within them.

He never lost the joy and sense of wonderment and he never gave in to the baser styles that fell in and out of favor over the years. From Queen Victoria's death in 1901 to the start of World War I, Rackham's illustrations preserved a lifestyle and a sensibility that kept the frighteningly modern future at bay. His beautiful drawings were the antithesis of the industrial advances that allowed them to be printed at affordable prices. Even into the twenties and thirties, his art was a constant reminder of those aspects of innocence that had been left behind. He always kept his gentle humor and his Wind in the Willows, published posthumously in 1940, is as much a children's classic as his Peter Pan. Rackham died in 1939.

Shipping & Handling Back to Top

We sell antique books, which are often heavier and bigger than the modern books and therefore could cost more on shipping and material than the from ebay required $4.00 for the very slow Media Mail (1-3 weeks!). These often very delicate and rare items will need more material and care to package, which IS NOT included in the $4.00 and with no option (yet) to add. on ebay-site. It is usually ca. $2.00-$4.00. Therefore, we will leave a note with the actual media mail shipping costs at the end of the item description if the item will exceed the from ebay required max. of $4.00 (including material + required delivery confirmation) and we will send you an invoice with the actual shipping/handling costs for Media Mail (if you would like to have the item send via Media Mail).

If the actual Media Mail shipping + material costs for an item will exceed the from ebay allowed max. of $4.00 and these add. costs, which the USPS postal service would charge us, are not covered by the buyer, we will not mail the item until the difference is paid by the buyer.

To avoid any delays in shipping please wait for our invoice, which we will send within 1-3 days. Thank you.

Please keep in mind that Media Mail goes per truck over CO,NV,AZ etc. and needs often NOT 2-9 days as ebay stated, BUT 1-3 weeks, sometimes even longer [!!] to arrive >> since Media Mail is also subject for inspection!!

Therefore, when you are going to post a feedback, please do not blame us for a longer delivery time, if you preferred the slow Media Mail as shipping option. We always ship to provided paypal address within 1-3 business days after payment is received. Thank you.

For faster delivery, we would recommend the not much more expansive Priority mail (1-3 days) >> rates see below, or just let us know and we will send you a revised ebay or a paypal invoice for Priority Mail or the insured (up to $100.00) Express Mail shipping.

NEW !!--> Express mail (domestic) delivery on Sunday and holidays will be add $12.50 to given rate!!! Please, if you would like to have Express package delivered on those special days, keep this in mind and add the $12.50 and also include a note with your payment.

If Express package is mailed close to those special days, but the add. rate is not paid, the Postal Service will hold the package and deliver it on the next business day. Thank you

Our shipping price includes solid packaging + required delivery confirmation on all of our packages within the US, but NO insurance unless otherwise stated. If you would like to have your item(s) mailed insured, please add. the proper fee (>>rates see at this section or at USPS.com) or just let us know and we will send a revised paypal invoice.

According to USPS, "Insurance provides up to $5,000 indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article. For items of greater value requiring additional insurance, try Registered Mail , which covers up to $25,000. Registered Mail can be used with First-class Mail ® and Priority Mail®." (if proper insurance coverage was purchased by the buyer or by the seller - as promotion)

We will do our best to pack your item[s] as secure as we can to avoid any damages during the regular transport according to the USPS postal regulations.

But, please keep in mind, there were some known and/or unreported accidents involving postal delivery trucks or planes, mostly during bad weather conditions... which could result in damaged or lost packages for which the postal service will not and we cannot take any responsibility, unless a proper insurance fee was added to the postage rate.

To all International customers:

Please see shipping rates for item below.

When item does not fit in the flat rate envelope or box, we always have a little note at the end of the item description. The rate displayed is the price of highest zone/country for your orientation what it might cost, BUT in most cases the shipping rate may be lower.

Please don't use ebay's 'country link' - the shipping price displayed will be not the correct one if the item does NOT fit in the flat rate envelope or flat rate box!!!! Please ask or just wait for the invoice, we will adjust.

Priority flat rate envelope or box & Express flat rate envelope is the same price for all countries. Thank you.

INTERNATIONAL:

We usually try to fit item in the flat rate envelope ->

Priority (no insurance coverage offered) or

Express - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -> is fully insured & has a tracking number or

Priority flat rate box (some insurance coverage - vary per country).

By multiple or bigger items/packages -> Rates vary per country (we always have it noted at the end of item description if item/package goes after weight). Please ask if flat rate is not given (weight limited up to 4 pounds by envelope or by flat rate box up to 20 pounds) -> it is mostly the best rate.

Add.'l insurance coverage can be purchased for all Priority packages incl. flat rate envelope or box -> it will be not a flat rate anymore, BUT after weight -> the rates will increase! Please ask. Thank you.

Please keep in mind, postage rates do not include any fees your custom may charge you.

Priority mail may need longer to arrive than within the usually 1-2 weeks, some customers had to wait up to 4-5 weeks for items to arrive. If you need an item faster, we strongly would recommend the fully insured and traceable Express mail, which normally will be delivered within 5-7 business days.

INSURANCE FEES (USA + Canada):

$1.75/for $50.00; $2.25/for $100.00; $2.75/for $200.00; $4.70/for $300.00 $1.00/for each add.'l $100.00.

INSURANCE - WORLD >> for Priority Mail (after weight):

Book Print Terminology Back to Top

EDITION:

1. The published form of a literary work.

2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED.

Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition.

PRINTING:

One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing ("1" is present in bar-code) or "A" or stated "first printing").

For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition".

STATE:

Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value.

ISSUE:

The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing.

For all of you who need more information like value etc.on books you have, there is a website which might be useful: www.bookgradingservice.com

CONTACT & FEEDBACK Back to Top
If you e-mail us about an item, please include always the item number.

FEEDBACK POLICY:

We have adopted a feedback policy that is beneficial to both parties. 4-vadomo-7 / Nicklaus Book Store considers an eBay transaction successful and finished, when the customer posts positive feedback for this item. We will reciprocate within 1-3 days. Before leaving Negative or Neutral, please contact us to see how we can work it out.

RETURN POLICY Back to Top
If you are not happy with the merchandise, contact us immediately (within two days after you received the item) by e-mail to see how we can resolve the deal to our mutual satisfaction before leaving neutral or negative feedback. We will be as fair as we can, but we will not issue refunds for buyers remorse or errors in bidding. If a return is accepted, the item needs to be returned within 3 days (by the buyer) and received within 7 days (by the seller) in the same condition as item was sold. No refund will be issued for return shipping cost.

We will do our best to accurately describe lots for sale, but on occasion we may make mistakes or simply can't explain every detail of the item due to time constrains. If you have any questions, ask them before placing a bid and we will reply promptly.

NON-PAYMENT POLICY Back to Top
NON-PAYING BIDDERS: Because of the costs involved with listing on ebay, we cannot tolerate Non-Paying Bidders.

PLEASE REMEMBER: As outlined by eBay, your bid is a contract. Place a bid only if you are serious about buying the item. If you are the winning bidder, you will enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller. You should contact the seller to resolve any question before bidding.

We pay eBay to list and sell our items, it is unfair to the seller when buyers do not complete the transaction.

Payment should be made within 7 days after auction has closed.

If payment is not received within this time period or if no other payment agreement is made, you will be notified by Ebay (NON-PAYING ALERT).

If it becomes necessary for me to request a refund of fees from Ebay for any reason, there is a risk for the non-paying bidder of suspension or expulsion after 3 such offenses.

Please keep this in mind, since prompt payment insures that both parties will be happy while maintaining the good will and integrity most people have come to expect from Ebay. THANK YOU
