Our pal Al at At War With False Noise has some of the best ears for hardcore power electronics, and this new full length from Rape-X is one of the heaviest PE albums since, well, since that Mike Page solo disc that At War lobbed at us a month ago. Based in the US, Rape-X are a confrontational, tough-as-nails electro death squad who have released a blistering split CD with Ghast (which we'll also have listed here shortly); they also play in the awesome noise-sludge band Sollubi with members of Fistula (whose debut album is also listed in this weeks new arrivals list), so I've been listening to their grating, grinding post-PE assault for awhile. I gotta say that their first full length False is much darker and heavier than anything that I've heard from this project so far, though, and fans of the heaviest power electronics out there are going to lose their shit when you they hear this.
Featuring images of trussed up women in the throes of hardcore rope bondage in the album artwork, False contains thirteen tracks of crushing PE that avoids the high-end modulated violence of practicioners like Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jugend and Con-Dom, and instead creates writhing, skuzzy slabs of low end blackness that sound like they are primarily guitar and feedback generated. Huge droning blocks of detuned distortion throb like monstrous heartbeats reverberating in a black cloud filled with shimmering metallic skree and ominous warbling minor key drift, at times (like on the nightmarish dronescapes "Arson" and the title track) actually veering really close to the more abstract Abruptum territory. On False, Rape-X are definitely blackened and hateful as fuck, and the overall mood is similiar to Prurient's recent explorations into ultra-distorted necro-power electronics. The vocals are way more brutal and metallic than your usual PE too, deep monstrous death metal roars, and the lyrics are recited over the grinding black filth like kidnapping demands, crack recipes, hardcore sadomasochistic poetry, and absolute negation of your life. Awesome crushing PE, an intense exercise in pulverising, ultra-heavy black electronics that exudes undistilled murderous energy through your speakers throughout the entire fifty-minutes of False.
