Rudolf Bauer (1889-9153) German-born painter involved in the avant-garde group Der Sturm in Berlin that included Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, and Franz Marc. Bauer remained in Berlin in the 1920s and continued to make both abstract (Non-Objective) art, as well as figurative work to support himself. In 1927, Hilla Rebay, Bauer's friend and ex-lover, was working with Solomon R. Guggenheim and after showing Guggenheim the Non-Objective art by Bauer and Kandinsky, he decided to start a collection of their work. In 1937, he formed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation for his collection, with Rebay as curator. In 1938, Bauer was arrested by the Nazis for his "degenerate" art. (The previous year Bauer’s work had been included in the infamous Degenerate Art show in Munich, organized by the Nazis). After several attempts and months, Guggenheim and Rebay helped gain Bauer's unconditional release in August 1938 and he emigrated to the United States in 1939. Shortly after Guggenheim's death in 1949 the trustees abandoned his original vision for the collection, Rebay was asked to step down as curator, and all Non-Objective collection was sent to storage.
