Item specifics - Antiquarian/Collectible Books

This is a 1671 English Expositour published in the reign of Charles II and in lovely condition for a book that has survived for 335 years !!

Just thinking about how many people must have handled this book over the centuries is intriguing by itself.  In 1671 only a small % of the population in England could read or even afford to buy a book.  No price is shown but given the stage printing had so far developed at the time it would have been expensive. I can only assume this would have been printed for academic purposes and owned initially by someone in the learned gentry/aristocracy of the day. This seems to be confirmed by a reference on the first page:

“Printed by John Hayes, Printer to CAMBRIDGE University and are to be sold by G. Sawbridge at the Bible on Ludgate-Hill, London 1671”

On the Preface page, you will notice that there is reference made to the Expositour having:

“A new and copius supply of Words and an index directing to the Hard Words”

This marvellous book is 5.5 inches by 3.25 inches.  There are about 150 pages (there is no page numbering) and they are in very good condition – no loose or missing pages and no tears.  The hardback cover has some wear but this is not surprising given it's age and the amount of use the book would have had.  The hardback is, however, completely sound and holds the pages securely.

I have had this book examined by 2 independent experts and I am told that the book itself is an authentic genuine 1671 edition.  I was also informed that the book was previously rebound and the current hardback dates from about 1780.

My father had this for decades and I have had it since his death 5 years ago.  I do not personally have a book collection and, apart from occasionally showing friends, this English Expositour has remained in a bureau drawer.  It deserves a better home and to be displayed.  I do not want to risk the vagaries of an audience at a one-off auction so have decided to put it on offer here.

I am offering FREE postage but for obvious reasons I will have to send as Special Delivery with insurance and signature upon receipt.

This is a lovely antique and, as I said earlier, is in remarkably good condition for a book that is 335 years old.    Good luck with your bidding.
