Attention: if you are looking for the true first edition of "Little Prince" be aware that many dealers list a "Harcourt and Brace" addition as "true first." The "Harcourt & Brace" edition with "copyright 1943" is mass-market edition first issued in late 1950s. TRUE first edition was  published by "Reynal & Hitchcock" . While "Reynal & Hitchcock" copies are scarce and highly collectible, "Harcourt & Brace" copies are mass-production.

April 6th,  is a Birthday of "Little Prince". The world-wide first edition was presented on this day in 1943, so "Little Prince" had his 65th Anniversary last year. The original French edition was first published in 1946,  almost three years later after appearance of this Katherine Woods' translation.

THE LITTLE PRINCE
, by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, RARE TRUE first edition, first state with colophon on page 94, published by Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Points of true first edition: "Reynal & Hitchock" is imprinted on spine, title page and copyright page; color flower on page 27; colophon on page 94.  Printing is not stated, which is the point of the first printing.

Original first state un-clipped dust jacket with "386 Fourth Avenue, New York" address. (DJ has some soiling, creases and wear). DJ is protected by the mylar cover.

Original pictorial hard cover; maroon cloth (a little soiling), 7.1/4" x 9", many b/w and color illustrations by the author, 93 pages + colophon; inscription on the front endpaper, no creases, very nice copy.  Very scarce true 1st/1st, especially in such very good condition.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in 1943, only a year before his Lockheed P-38 vanished over the Mediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. More than a half century later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none of its power. The narrator is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts are interrupted one day by the apparition of a little, well, prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. "In the face of an overpowering mystery, you don't dare disobey," the narrator recalls.

"Absurd as it seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of my pocket." And so begins their dialog, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions. The Little Prince describes his journey from planet to planet, each tiny world populated by a single adult. It's a wonderfully inventive sequence, which evokes not only the great fairy tales but also such monuments of postmodern whimsy as Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. And despite his tone of gentle bemusement, Saint-Exupéry pulls off some fine satiric touches, too.

There's the king, for example, who commands the Little Prince to function as a one-man (or one-boy) judiciary: I have good reason to believe that there is an old rat living somewhere on my planet. I hear him at night. You could judge that old rat. From time to time you will condemn him to death. That way his life will depend on your justice. But you'll pardon him each time for economy's sake. There's only one rat.

The author pokes similar fun at a businessman, a geographer, and a lamplighter, all of whom signify some futile aspect of adult existence. Yet his tale is ultimately a tender one--a heartfelt exposition of sadness and solitude, which never turns into Peter Pan-style treacle. Such delicacy of tone can present real headaches for a translator, and in her 1943 translation, Katherine Woods sometimes wandered off the mark, giving the text a slightly wooden or didactic accent. Saint-Exupéry's drawings offer a handy rebuttal: they're fresh, funny, and like the book itself, rigorously truthful.

An extremely popular book, both in French and in English, first editions are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The book is known for it's wonderful story line as well as for the charming illustrations throughout.

"The Little Prince lived alone on a tiny planet no larger than a house. He possessed three volcanoes, two active and one extinct, although one never knows about volcanoes. He also owned a flower, unlike any flower in all the galaxy, of great beauty and of inordinate pride. It was this pride that ruined the serenity of the Little Prince's world and started him on the travels that brought him at last to the Earth where he learned finally, from a fox, the secret of what is really important in life.

"To preserve his memory of the Little Prince, Saint-Exupery has made some forty watercolors, whimsical, gravely meticulous in detail. Each is an almost essential part of the story..There are a few stories which in some way, in some degree, change the world forever for their readers. This is one."

Shipping & Handling Back to Top

We sell antique books, which are often heavier and bigger than the modern books and therefore could cost more on shipping and material than the from ebay required $4.00 for the very slow Media Mail (1-3 weeks!). These often very delicate and rare items will need more material and care to package, which IS NOT included in the $4.00 and with no option (yet) to add. on ebay-site. It is usually ca. $2.00-$4.00. Therefore, we will leave a note with the actual media mail shipping costs at the end of the item description if the item will exceed the from ebay required max. of $4.00 (including material + required delivery confirmation) and we will send you an invoice with the actual shipping/handling costs for Media Mail (if you would like to have the item send via Media Mail).

If the actual Media Mail shipping + material costs for an item will exceed the from ebay allowed max. of $4.00 and these add. costs, which the USPS postal service would charge us, are not covered by the buyer, we will not mail the item until the difference is paid by the buyer.

To avoid any delays in shipping please wait for our invoice, which we will send within 1-3 days. Thank you.

Please keep in mind that Media Mail goes per truck over CO,NV,AZ etc. and needs often NOT 2-9 days as ebay stated, BUT 1-3 weeks, sometimes even longer [!!] to arrive >> since Media Mail is also subject for inspection!!

Therefore, when you are going to post a feedback, please do not blame us for a longer delivery time, if you preferred the slow Media Mail as shipping option. We always ship to provided paypal address within 1-3 business days after payment is received. Thank you.

For faster delivery, we would recommend the not much more expansive Priority mail (1-3 days) >> rates see below, or just let us know and we will send you a revised ebay or a paypal invoice for Priority Mail or the insured (up to $100.00) Express Mail shipping.

NEW !!--> Express mail (domestic) delivery on Sunday and holidays will be add $12.50 to given rate!!! Please, if you would like to have Express package delivered on those special days, keep this in mind and add the $12.50 and also include a note with your payment.

If Express package is mailed close to those special days, but the add. rate is not paid, the Postal Service will hold the package and deliver it on the next business day. Thank you

Our shipping price includes solid packaging + required delivery confirmation on all of our packages within the US, but NO insurance unless otherwise stated. If you would like to have your item(s) mailed insured, please add. the proper fee (>>rates see at this section or at USPS.com) or just let us know and we will send a revised paypal invoice.

According to USPS, "Insurance provides up to $5,000 indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article. For items of greater value requiring additional insurance, try Registered Mail , which covers up to $25,000. Registered Mail can be used with First-class Mail ® and Priority Mail®." (if proper insurance coverage was purchased by the buyer or by the seller - as promotion)

We will do our best to pack your item[s] as secure as we can to avoid any damages during the regular transport according to the USPS postal regulations.

But, please keep in mind, there were some known and/or unreported accidents involving postal delivery trucks or planes, mostly during bad weather conditions... which could result in damaged or lost packages for which the postal service will not and we cannot take any responsibility, unless a proper insurance fee was added to the postage rate.

To all International customers:

Please see shipping rates for item below.

When item does not fit in the flat rate envelope or box, we always have a little note at the end of the item description. The rate displayed is the price of highest zone/country for your orientation what it might cost, BUT in most cases the shipping rate may be lower.

Please don't use ebay's 'country link' - the shipping price displayed will be not the correct one if the item does NOT fit in the flat rate envelope or flat rate box!!!! Please ask or just wait for the invoice, we will adjust.

Priority flat rate envelope or box & Express flat rate envelope is the same price for all countries. Thank you.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS:

We usually try to fit item in the flat rate envelope ->

Priority (no insurance coverage offered) or

Express - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -> is fully insured & has a tracking number or

Priority flat rate box (some insurance coverage - vary per country).

By multiple or bigger items/packages -> Rates vary per country (we always have it noted at the end of item description if item/package goes after weight). Please ask if flat rate is not given (weight limited up to 4 pounds by envelope or by flat rate box up to 20 pounds) -> it is mostly the best rate.

Add.'l insurance coverage can be purchased for all Priority packages incl. flat rate envelope or box -> it will be not a flat rate anymore, BUT after weight -> the rates will increase! Please ask. Thank you.

IMPORTANT NOTE for international buyers:

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

It maybe recommended to check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs may be prior to bidding/buying.

If, these fees would be normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Please do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.

Priority mail may need longer to arrive than within the usually 1-2 weeks, some customers had to wait up to 4-5 weeks for items to arrive. If you need an item faster, we strongly would recommend the fully insured and traceable Express mail, which normally will be delivered within 5-7 business days.

INSURANCE FEES (USA + Canada):

$1.75/for $50.00; $2.25/for $100.00; $2.75/for $200.00; $4.70/for $300.00 $1.00/for each add.'l $100.00.

INSURANCE - WORLD >> for Priority Mail (after weight):

Book Print Terminology Back to Top

EDITION:

1. The published form of a literary work.

2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED.

Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition.

PRINTING:

One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing ("1" is present in bar-code) or "A" or stated "first printing").

For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition".

STATE:

Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value.

ISSUE:

The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing.

For all of you who need more information like value etc.on books you have, there is a website which might be useful: www.bookgradingservice.com

CONTACT & FEEDBACK Back to Top
If you e-mail us about an item, please include always the item number.

FEEDBACK POLICY:

We have adopted a feedback policy that is beneficial to both parties. 4-vadomo-7 / Nicklaus Book Store considers an eBay transaction successful and finished, when the customer posts positive feedback for this item. We will reciprocate within 1-3 days. Before leaving Negative or Neutral, please contact us to see how we can work it out.

RETURN POLICY Back to Top
If you are not happy with the merchandise, contact us immediately (within two days after you received the item) by e-mail to see how we can resolve the deal to our mutual satisfaction before leaving neutral or negative feedback. We will be as fair as we can, but we will not issue refunds for buyers remorse or errors in bidding. If a return is accepted, the item needs to be returned within 3 days (by the buyer) and received within 7 days (by the seller) in the same condition as item was sold. No refund will be issued for return shipping cost.

We will do our best to accurately describe lots for sale, but on occasion we may make mistakes or simply can't explain every detail of the item due to time constrains. If you have any questions, ask them before placing a bid and we will reply promptly.

NON-PAYMENT POLICY Back to Top
NON-PAYING BIDDERS: Because of the costs involved with listing on ebay, we cannot tolerate Non-Paying Bidders.

PLEASE REMEMBER: As outlined by eBay, your bid is a contract. Place a bid only if you are serious about buying the item. If you are the winning bidder, you will enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller. You should contact the seller to resolve any question before bidding.

We pay eBay to list and sell our items, it is unfair to the seller when buyers do not complete the transaction.

Payment should be made within 7 days after auction has closed.

If payment is not received within this time period or if no other payment agreement is made, you will be notified by Ebay (NON-PAYING ALERT).

If it becomes necessary for me to request a refund of fees from Ebay for any reason, there is a risk for the non-paying bidder of suspension or expulsion after 3 such offenses.

Please keep this in mind, since prompt payment insures that both parties will be happy while maintaining the good will and integrity most people have come to expect from Ebay. THANK YOU
