This c. 1930s jacket / top is an adaptation of a Chanel design. My research shows that pieces with this label were an early example of a licensing arrangement with a fashion designer. Because the couture pieces by the most famous designers were very costly and difficult for Americans to get, licensing agreements were made between the finest fashion houses and buyers from American department stores. They were allowed to produce a certain number of exact copies of the the original design that they had manufactured in the U.S. I've read that sometimes they used the same fabrics that were used for the originals. They were labeled in such a way to reflect that they were not made by the original designer, but rather an licensed adaptation of one of their designs. This jacket is made from an unusual fabric printed with alternating bands of a paisley pattern and black stripes. The fabric also has a couched design of an abstract floral pattern done over the top of the fabric's pattern. The overall effect is bold and complex. The jacket zips up the front with a metal Talon zipper. The sleeves taper and have buttons at the wrists. label reads: "Adaptation Chanel Paris" approximate measurements: 14.75" from back of shoulder to shoulder 24" from shoulder to cuff 20" from armpit to armpit 23.25" from back of neckline to hem 19" across the hem condition: good condition general wear several snagged threads dart seams of front of jacket have come undone some losses to the fabric on shoulder (see detail photo) label is worn, torn and resewn one wrist button has torn fabric and another is missing POLICIES- PLEASE READ We do not end auctions early or add buy-it-now prices, so please don't ask us to.
