A nice hand produced item. The coin is set on strong double thickness (Hand plied) card. Individually produced. I have other designs and other British coins,  (Gifts with a difference,) listed  :- This is now mainly a hobby and I list just a few a day but I have collected and sold coins, particularily lucky "tanners", (sixpences) since the 60's.  I invite you to read !!  !!

The Lucky Silver Sixpence for the

Grooms Mother. ( On the Wings of a Dove ! )

A Lovely Tradition which has been with us for Centuries. The Silver Sixpence is lucky whoever it is given to and I have only just started providing them for the Brides Mother, Grooms Mother and others after special requests from bidders.  Particularily from U.S.A, Canada and AusNZ.

This is a Genuine Silver (.500 fine) George VI  Sixpence. (crown design)  On sturdy  hand plied printed Pretty little card in a 2" X 2" collectors pouch/wallet. The coin is attached with a tiny amount of d/tape and can be easily removed from its pouch for insertion into a card.  The pouch has peelable adhesive on the reverse.

The Sixpence was first minted during the reign of Edward VI and during the reign of Elizabeth Ist it quickly became a very popular coin.

A brief History of the Lucky Silver Sixpence tradition :-   Silver has been regarded as "lucky" since time immemorial. And very special, having the power to keep evil and malign spirits and suchlike away and cause them great harm.. It has historically been part of custom and folklore.  The Silver Chalice, (Even when Gold was available) The Silver Cross, Silver spoon, Silver Dagger and Sword, and more recently the Silver Bullet. Particularly in times of importance and celebration in peoples live when the mischievous, malign and evil beings were most likely to appear.. Birthdays, Weddings , Christmas (Silver Sixpence in the Christmas pud', New Year, Halloween, Births etc. etc..  At times of Marriage for example it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give the Bride from the Estate a SILVER present. Certainly since feudal times. This evolved into the custom of giving the Bride a silver sixpence to wear on her Wedding Day to ensure a happy, long and prosperous Marriage. With the demise of feudalism the custom became that of the Brides Father or head of the houshold presenting the Bride with the Sixpence. The Sixpence was then worn by the Bride during the Marriage ceremony. Generally worn in the Slipper but also can be stitched into the dress hem or Garter. These days the Sixpence can be given as a gift by Friends or Family as well. Also these days given to other Family Members.   In my family we had silver sixpences which were worn by my Sisters and the Custom is certainly alive and well in the English "Shire" Counties, Wales and Scotland.. They still go in the Christmas Pud. (I never could work out how when the Pud was cut, us kids all got one each?? I know now !!!)  The Silver Sixpence is lucky whoever it is given to and I have only just started providing them for the Brides Mother and others after special requests from bidders.  Particularily from U.S.A, Canada and AusNZ where I have been told off for not mentioning the tradition is still alive in those countries. !!!

HOWEVER  this tradition originated with the Silver Metal  evolving to the Silver Sixpence. Please just be aware that British Coins minted after 1946 contain no Silver, not a smidgeon!! The above would not apply. The Sixpence that I send will be a George VI  Sixpence minted by the ROYAL MINT dated between 1937 and 1946.  The Crown Sixpence was the last minted with silver content.. A beautiful collectable coin. They are in worn, circulated but good condition. Imagine the good luck that has worn off on them!!! Design and text/date will all be clear..

This coin minted by Royal Mint. (When money was money) and probably our most popular coin. So much so that in 1967 - 71 when we went over to the pretend money ! We had S.O.S stickers on our cars. "SAVE OUR SIXPENCE" - That popular !!!

What a wonderful and extra special gift .The sixpence is set on a little printed card inside a 2"x 2" P.V.C collecting pouch\wallet. The pouch has peelable adhesive on the reverse so it can be attached. Usually inside a card of your own choice as a really nice surprise extra gift !!!

. Very Low start and low post and package. The buyer will receive this coin or one in similar condition. I try and scan an average coin with normal wear for the year. All coins will have clear text,  date and no obvious damage. I am a collector and  guarantee that the coins are as described and authentic. Should there be a genuine doubt on receipt I will refund monies plus return postage. If paying by cheque the coin will be sent immediately on receipt. No waiting for clearance. (Please remember that scans  Rarely do a coin any justice..)Normal dispatch -- Following business day after receipt of payment.--- always within 2 days --- Cert. of post always obtained.

I hope you enjoyed your visit.  Best Wishes and all the very best of luck to you from  Bill (Weaknesses Coins and History)
