Norscot Group Inc. of Mequon, WI had this die-cast model produced in China. This is called the 1920 Briggs and Stratton Flyer. The Flyer, which is no more than a motorized park bench on bicycle wheels. No suspension, no bodywork, no windshield. It was actually a five wheeler, with the dinky 2-hp Briggs and Stratton engine driving a traction wheel on the back, like a boat's outboard motor. The drive to make the absolute cheapest, most minimal automobile possible. The first model was produced in 1917 when A. O. Smith got the rights to the motor wheel that was produced to propelle bicycles. He produced the A. O. Smith Flyer designed by New Jersey Company of 6 varnished hardwood slats, two and one-half inches wide. The Flyer was metal parts was painted a bright red. The flyer had the axles and two seats bolted to the wooden slats with no suspension. In 1919 company and rights was sold to Briggs and Stratton with the name changed to the Briggs & Stratton Flyer. A lever lowered and raised the traction wheel to probell the vehicle. All parts of this model like wheels, lever for traction wheel, and front wheels steer. A wonderful model for the collector of rare type die-cast models. |
