Henry G. Bohn, London. Second edition, revised, 1848. Hardcover. 5 x 7 1/2 inches. 518 pages plus 40 page catalog of books. Front and back boards joints are reinforced with Japanese mending tissue, as the joints are otherwise split—so they are attached now, but are loose. Boards have a stripe on the outside near the spine where tape or glue was removed. Spine cover missing. Endpapers somewhat stained. Owners names and dates (1942 and 1849) on endpaper and title page. Beautiful color frontispiece lithograph with tissue guard, titled The Sphinx and captioned White playing first mates in eleven moves. Text pages are very clean, with a few dog-eared or worn at edges. Contents include:

The King’s Gambit
The Queen’s Gambit
Irregular Openings: The French and Sicilian Games, The Center Counter Gambit, The Fianchetto
