 “Budyonovka” - red army a cloth helmet of the special sample, a uniform headdress of military men of Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.

On May, 7th, 1918 the order of the National Commissioner on military businesses of RSFSR had been declared competition on working out of new regimentals for military men RCRA in which known Russian artists V.M.Vasnetsov, B.M.Kustodiev, M.D.Ezuchevsky, S.Arkadevsky have participated, etc.

On December, 18th, 1918 on the basis of works “РВСР” presented on competition has approved new type of a winter headdress from uniform cloth. The accepted sample, apparently, has been grouped from two (or more) the design headdresses offered by various authors, and appearance reminded traditional protective helmets of Old Russian troops. Thus in it as though incorporated the form of a peaked metal helmet of soldiers from the nobility to properties a felt helmet of private soldiers.

At first the existence red army the helmet has received the name for the epic shape «bogatirca», subsequently it named on names of military leaders in which part the first the new regimentals – M.V. Frunze and S.M. Budyonny have arrived: «frunzevca» and «budyonovka». The last name has taken roots and has entered into Russian dictionaries.
