A selection of anonymous stories told in verse.

Over 1/2 the book is taken by the title story, which recounts the adventures of Lieutenant Crocio Frog who joins a children's meeting held at the bottom of a garden on the 4th of July centenary. The story asks that naughty small boys stop tormenting frogs.

The illustrations are by the Philadelphian Herman Faber (1832 - 1913) who was, unusually, noted for his etchings of animals and also for those illustrating serious medical works. During the American Civil War , he served on the Surgeon General's staff under Generals Barnes & Woodward as the official artist of the United States medical records.

Condition :
Covers edge worn - especially the spine . Corners rubbed . Clean and bright with scratch on front board.

A bookplate has been badly removed from the front endpaper.

The rear free endpaper has been neatly removed . Name and date 1884 to 1/2 title page.

Dedication and contents pages detaching at bottom only , otherwise solidly bound . Occasional marks to margins - most pages clean and crisp .


Engravings clean and clear.

EXTREMELY SCARCE
There are 10 copies noted on COPAC held at University Libraries worldwide - including Brown , UCLA and Penn State, but difficult to own - NON in ANY recent auction / sales records.
