MGM (Melody Green Mine) Quartz™ Crystals come from the Melody Green Mine or the MGM. The MGM was located just outside Mt. Ida in the Ouchita area of Arkansas. The MGM produced over 2000 pounds of crystals. Some of the crystals had Chlorite inclusions, some had Slate, and some black phantoms. There were also Growth Interference Crystals and many gorgeous water clear crystals. The mine also contained Slaty Shale Record Stone™.  In 2002, Melody decided to reclaim the mine.  The the mine was closed and the huge pit was filled. On Earth Day, she had a re-greening ceremony of re-seeding the land and now it is covered with glorious wildflowers and millet. Consequently, there won't be any new material from there.

When I was in Denver several years ago attending the Gem and Mineral Shows, I was fortunate to meet Melody and visit with her associate, Bob Jackson. Bob sells many of the minerals and crystals described in Melody's books and is mentioned in them also. In his room I found a few small clusters from the MGM. The material is very scarce now, if you can find it at all. This cluster is from a flat of old stock that I found in Denver last week and is verified by Bob.  As of May 2008 Earth-Love Publishing has been issuing Certificates of Authenticity for the MGM Quartz™.  You you will receive a certificate with this cluster.

In her new book, a huge ten pound encyclopedia called:  "Love is in the Earth - The Crystal and Mineral Encyclopedia - The Liite Fantastic and The Last Testament",  Melody says "This crystal possesses a defending quality and is an excellent preventative which will shield one from many forms of negative energy." This crystal has experienced growth interference as has the Star Gazer crystal embedded in its termination.  It will travel to its new home with some Slaty Shale Record Stone to keep it company!

The Star Gazer Crystal is recognized as a smaller crystal that penetrates or is partially embedded in the face of a larger crystal.   It symbolizes the deep connection of our Primal Consciousness to our Star Origins, these memories are encoded within our DNA.  The Star Gazer gently awakens us to those inherent memories.  It promotes a calm inner peace.

  

Located in the Ouachita area in the Northwest corner of Arkansas outside of Mt Ida, the Melody Green Mine is a source of quartz crystals characterized by the presence of manganese and chlorite bearing slatey shale with attendant associated inclusions in the quartz crystals, such as slate particles, manganese phantoms and chlorite. The host matrix is slatey shale, a sedimentary rock composed of consolidated clay particles. The original sedimentary deposits were associated with a southward facing seacoast, the Ouachita area corresponding to the abyssal plain just past a "continental shelf", in Paleozoic times. Near the end of that era, the area was uplifted by collision with another continental plate (Texas/Oklahoma?). The resulting folding and faulting process (multimillion year process) produced the Ouachita Mountains. The shale in the Ouachita area has undergone low-grade metamorphism associated with this folding and faulting episode. The initial quartz veins and most subsequent quartz intrusions are thought to be associated with this sequence. The silica constituting the bulk of the quartz, it is thought, originated with the erosional debris accumulated in the abyssal plain. The dating of the quartz veins and crystals suggests a late Paleozoic formation.

The most intriguing aspect of the quartz crystallization at the Melody Green Mine is the clearly discernible sequence. An initial crystallization of a milky quartz is associated with a milky quartz vein material intruding into and disrupting the shale. Associated with this, but subsequent in timing, is another sequence of milky quartz subject to profound growth interference. The formation of a milky quartz results from significant inclusion of water/gas into the quartz structure (but not the crystal lattice). The patterns of growth interference suggest a now-absent laminar substance into which the quartz attempted to form. The growth interference quartz is on top of and loosely bonded to the first milky quartz intrusion. Finally, another intrusion of silica solution occurs, producing the "solution" quartz crystals and veins. This very clear quartz is found generally separately from the former formations (although there are some clusters that exhibit all three forms), and typically consists of thinner veins and smaller crystal points. Interestingly, this solution quartz will contain manganese phantoms and pieces of slate. The chlorite inclusions typically are more likely to be associated with the milky quartz. Finally, the solution quartz deposits were evidently subjected to severely disruptive forces during formation. Many double terminated crystals and faden crystals are found in the vugs.

Another intriguing aspect of the formation is the occurrence of three distinct types of clay. There is a white clay, a yellowish clay and a gray clay. The latter is apparently broken down slatey-shale. The white clay may be the remnants of the slate after removal of the associated manganese. The yellow clay is apparently iron bearing and may result from the breakdown of pyrite and/or chlorite. The white and gray clays are relatively simple materials and dissociate relatively easily. The yellowish clay exhibits the properties of a plastic, forming globules which readily aggregate, and which, upon drying, setup similar to a concrete (eg exhibiting hardness while still damp).
