We are pleased to be offering to you this gorgeous and unusual thirteen piece Duncan-Phyfe banded inlaid dining room suite to you today. It probably dates from the 1960s, and consists of a very rare set of TEN matching spade foot Hepplewhite style dining chairs. A set of ten is very hard to find, and this set comes with two armchairs and eight side chairs with green leather seats and a stunning little inlaid back. Also featured in this set are the banded top inlaid sideboard, the banded top inlaid server, and the outstanding banded inlaid top double pedestal table. I believe the wood on the cross banding is mahogany, and the wide wood is yew. This set has solid wood chairs, which are totally unbelievable—we believe that if we sold the pieces out of this set, one at a time, the chairs would likely bring as much as we are asking for the entire set. It is so hard to find this style of chairs, and the quality of them is just unbelievable. We are totally gone on this suite, as we’ve been in the business for a long time, and one would be hard pressed to come across something of this quality and style all too often. The sideboard and the server both have a brown flame mahogany veneer front, and the chairs, the server, and the sideboard all have Hepplewhite spade feet. The Duncan Phyfe table has the brass cap footed base that comes off a multi turn column post. The set retains its original finish, which is a medium umber, or light brown. It has a few little nicks and dings here are there, but nothing too serious. It comes with a key to lock the doors and drawers on the server and the sideboard, but we always tell people that the locks always have to be cleaned and adjusted to make sure they work, as old locks are temperamental.
The overall sizes starting with the sideboard first are: 60 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 35 inches high. This sideboard has two inlaid flame oval Mahogany doors that open up with a shelf interior, and two reverse-curve drawers, with the top drawer being divided and felt lined for silverware, and wonderful hand cut English dovetail on both drawers. It also features embossed Duncan Phyfe style hardware. The cabinet stands on four spade foot legs and two rear spade foot legs. The overall condition is very nice; it is a very heavy piece.
The server measures: 42 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 31 inches high, and features two outside drawers with the oval flame mahogany panels, a key, two drawers in the center, hand cut dovetailed and banded edge top and sides, and inlaid panels going down the tapered legs. It is quaint and cute and could even be put in another room by itself. It has a few minor surface cracks, but is otherwise in good condition.
The very extraordinary set of ten matching chairs is constructed of all solid wood, and has green leather seats. The overall condition of the chairs is outstanding. Some of the leather seats are crazed and crackled a little bit due to age, but this can be expected, and there are no big rips of tears and remain very usable. The chairs themselves are very tight. The side chairs measure 20 inches wide, 17 inches deep, 36 inches to the top of the chair back, and 20 inches high to the seat. The armchairs are 23 inches wide, 18 inches deep, 36 inches to the top of the back, and 20 inches high to the seat. They have brass antique tacks that accent the leather seats, carved knuckles on the armchairs, dainty little center splats on the side chairs, and armchairs that are carved on the top center and also have banded inlay on the inside—a fantastic set of ten! These are hard to find, solid chairs with a beautiful serpentine front, a flared back leg, and Hepplewhite spade foot on the front leg—outstanding!
Last but not least is the Duncan Phyfe dining table. It is beautiful in person. It has a yew wood top, and a cross grain and mahogany banded edge that sets upon a vase type turn center pedestal triple leg base terminating in a traditional Hepplewhite brass cap foot. There is one 24-inch leaf that comes with the table. The leaf itself is a few shades lighter than the table itself, which is typical since the leaves are usually stored in a closet, and the tabletop has been exposed to the light for years. This is no big deal, but we did want to mention it for clarity. The leaf is banded, just like the table! The table itself, when closed up is 72 inches wide, 39 inches deep, and has a height of 30 inches. The table, when the leaf is added, measures 84 inches long.
So, you are bidding on a very stylish sideboard, server, a very rare set of ten matching chairs, and a beautiful double pedestal table all for one-money. We are very pleased to be offering this stunning and rare set to you today. You would have to go a long, long way to find one that is similar to this that is even half the quality. We are excited that we found it and are able to offer it to you. Enjoy the listing and check out our other items for more unusual and hard to find antiques!
