Original artwork from Morrie Turner's drawing board used for the syndicated newspaper strip Wee Pals for December 17, 1976. Turner drew this classic on duo tone board, pen and ink. Newer strips are done on regular board and markers. Measures approximately 5.2" x 15.5". This strip features Dizzy, Jerry, and George on the spelling of Hanukkah. The signs that Jerry are putting up are pasteovers with Morrie's original lettering. Starting in 1965, Wee Pals became the first syndicated strip in the US to feature a cast of multiple ethnicities and prominently feature African Americans in a positive light. It playfully touched upon relevant social, political, environmental issues of the times as seen through the innocent eyes of the humorous children. It even offered the possibility of having a black president someday. It has been collected in books, turned into an animated series, featured in art exhibits, and the strip is still in syndication today. This 70's strip was during the height of the strip's popularity with Turner's artwork and wit at their best. Having grown up in the 70's there wasn't the political correctness of today and Turner pulled no punches when poking fun of the absurd things that kept people apart and the optimism for things that kept society together. One of the all time pioneering figures in comic strip art, Morrie Turner's legend and work has and will continue to inspire for generations to come. Would look great framed in the office or in the house. $6 shipping to the US, 15 international. Be sure to check the about ME page to add to your eBay WINS!! |
