Being offered is the One & Only Charter Record of the First General Meeting of Edgar Allan Poe Club. This meeting was held at the Poe House in Phila. on September 26, 1930. BACKGROUND: In 1977 I bought the contents of the Poe House from Mrs. Frayne the long time curator of the house. The fabulous collection of Poe Memorabilia was given to the Phila. Public Library in 1970, & the rest of the contents were willed to Mrs. Frayne. Mr. Richard Gimbel bought the rundown Poe House in 1928, to restore it & make a monument to Poe in Phila. He decided to contact the most illustrious literary figures in Phila. & proposed the formation of the Edgar Allan Poe Club. They agreed to meet at the House in 1930 & become Charter Members of the Club. They each signed this document, 16 of them plus the signatures of Mr. Gimbel & his wife.(See pictures) Two of my favorites are on here: Agnes Repplier the wonderful short story writer, & Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer one of the first historians to concentrate on the history of the PA German culture. This charter was never on display in the House, but hung proudly on the wall of Mr. Gimbel's office. This was one of the last things I bought from Mrs. Frayne, because she said she had so many wonderful memories of "talking books" with these brilliant Charter Members, that she hated to part with it. In the original frame, framed by Gimbel Brothers in 1930, measures 23" x 16 1/2", & label is still on back.(See picture) There is some water stains on the bottom, which could be removed.(See pictures) It went from Mr. Gimbel's office to my office, & now I hope it will become an important part of a great Poe Collection. Whoever gets it, I hope you have room on your office wall for it, because it will feel out of place anywhere else. By the way, that is all hand-lettered, NOT a print.
