If you spend $X on marketing, you need to know how many inquiries you get from that and how much money actually comes in the door from that spend. In fact, since we're both number people, I really want to know more metrics than that. You can only improve what you measure. We'll discuss "rubber meets the road" ways to make sure that every dollar you spend on marketing returns a specific increase in business and then work on improving those numbers as you refine your marketing message, where you run that message and the specific groups you intend to target as new clients.
  4. Joint Venture With Strong Advocates - Let's face it... many bookkeepers seek out accounting because they do NOT want to be in sales, but as a business owner you need a way to get new business in the door. Finding someone that is strong advocate of you and your service (because they already know, like and trust you) and then joint venturing with them to help grow your business could be well worth the time and resources to set that in motion. In fact, if a good advocate can bring in a few new clients a month, I'd recommend that you find a dozen advocates to joint venture with and then take very good care of the golden goose.
  5. Solve Your Marketing Problem, Then Raise Your Prices - You probably realize that there is a wide range of prices that bookkeepers charge for their service. And you know what? Some of the best bookkeepers actually charge the absolute lowest prices. Do you know why? The skills that make a bookkeeper great often make them lousy at sales and marketing. When you don't have enough clients you are reluctant to raise prices and risk having some go elsewhere. The bookkeeper that has solved their marketing problems can raise their prices with relative impunity. Charging a higher price directly improves the bottom line (and incidentally gives you a larger budget for marketing).
  6. Solve Your Marketing Problem, Then Bring In Help - If you really got your marketing figured out, you can raise prices AND bring in additional, super sharp bookkeepers to help with the overflow. Even though you are in a bookkeeping business, you really are in a sales and marketing business selling a bookkeeping service. Once you admit that to yourself, you can bring in the best help and have them take over the surplus work from your marketing efforts.

Let Tools Do The Selling For You - We can learn a lot by looking around at other sales businesses... here's something you can borrow from the Network Marketing industry: let tools do the selling for you. In the Network Marketing industry they constantly talk about keeping the business duplicatable. In other words, a dud needs to be able to sell the product, service or business opportunity to a stud with little or no training. Do you know how they accomplish that? They let... in fact, the great ones actually insist... that all Network Marketers use tools to make their presentations and ultimately their sales. You need to do the same and I have some very strong opinions and specific tools and strategies for you to be able to use tools to prospect for new business. What if you could have tools out there "talking" to 5, 10, 25, 100 new potential customers every single week. Can you see how that will fill your pipeline of new clients?
  8. Provide More Than Your Core Service - The overwhelming majority of your clients have a limit on how much bookkeeping they are willing to pay for in a given month. But, did you know that your clients--who know, like and trust you--would consider your recommendation of a quality, related product or service to be a welcome extension of your expertise? For example, what if you shared with your niche of real estate agent clients some information on a great service that would be helpful to them? What if you could be compensated for that recommendation?
