This piece of Gibson history has it all, the good, the bad and the ugly! The parts are great. The pickup, tuners, bridge, pickup cover, nut, truss rod, pick guard, thumb rest, knobs, pots are all original, work, look and sound great and would probably bring well over $1000 if sold individually.
The guitar sounds bad ass with tons of tone and mojo. The truss rod works, the neck is straight, with frets showing very little wear. I had three vintage guitar repair and parts experts check out the pots and they all agreed that they were 95% sure the pots were original, but without removing the solder it was impossible to be 100% sure ( the green resistor is not original but works fine). The truss rod cover is not original, it is a Gibson part which I bought for $10 at my local SA store.
I believe the case to be original. When I bought this bass, I was told that it was a 1965 but my research suggests that it is probably a 1966.
The ugly is the repaired crack under the head stock (way too common with this model), the painted body, clear sprayed neck, missing the mute
(usually available on eBay).
As I mentioned before, the truss rod works as it should, the bass plays now with high action but sounds beautiful. It really needs the neck to be reset to be made right and play with low action. Frets are OK but they could be dressed down to be perfect and lower the action even more. I would guess that this guitar was originally the natural brown color (being as the thumb rest is natural brown not black). A refinish job could bring this bass back to its original beauty and true value.
Feel free to contact me with any questions. I have 100% positive feedback so you can bid with confidence. The pictures that I have included are extremely high resolution and should answer most questions better than I can. I reserve the right to end this auction at any time to sell this guitar locally if no bids have been placed. Once a bid has been registered this Gibson will go to the highest bidder. If it does not sell, I will probably list the parts individually. Winning bidder will pay shipping and insurance charges. I will not charge for a box or packing materials and I only charge you what I am charged for shipping. BUT BE AWARE that eBay's shipping quotes are usually wrong so you will need to wait for an invoice before paying. MY shipping zip code is 60148, the bass will ship in a standard guitar box and will probably weigh around 35 to 40 pounds so please do a little research on your own before asking me to quote exact shipping charges to your house.
