This book was owned by Giles Cooke.  Signed by Cooke, as shown.  THIS ITEM IS MADE EVEN MORE SPECIAL IN THAT COOKE PRESENTED THIS VERY BOOK TO THE WILLIAM B. TALIAFERRO LIBRARY!!  General William Taliaferro was a Confederate General who served under Stonewall Jackson, among others.  He was commander at the battle on Morris Island, which was shown in the classic film GLORY.  A GREAT COLLECTOR'S PIECE!!  UNIQUE Civil War Connected Item!  A biography of Cooke is given below.  He was on the staff of General Robert E. Lee and accompanied Lee on that fateful day at Appomattox.  He was the longest living member of his staff as well.  He is featured on the well known Military Medallion with Lee and all of those who surrendered with him on April 9th, 1865.

Reverend Giles Buckner Cooke

Born in Virginia, Cooke graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1859.  Notably, one of his teachers was Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.  Cooke became a teacher, but with secession in 1861, he enlisted as an aide to Brigadier General Philip St. George Cocke.  He fought at Manassas and Shiloh and served on the staff of Generals Bragg and Beauregard. In 1864 he began serving as General Robert E. Lee’s Assistant Adjutant and Inspector General.  He was wounded at Sayler’s Creek and was also present with Lee at Appomattox where he was paroled.  He was the last officer and staff member of General Lee’s to pass away.  He died at age 98 in 1937.

After the war he taught school until 1871 when he became an Episcopalian minister.  Giles Cooke became the principal of the first African American public school in Petersburg and later pastured African Americans at the cost of a few friendships.  An article in “The Sunday Star,” Washington D.C. on May 8, 1932 featured Mr. Cooke and his life story.  He still had a picture of General Lee on Traveler over his mantle and still treasured the letters he received from Lee after the war.  “And,” Cooke was quoted as saying, “God has been so good to me.  My last years are such happy ones.”
