73pc DURGIN FAIRFAX pat STERLING SILVER FLATWARE SET
Presented is a handsome 73 piece sterling silver flatware set by Durgin. The set is done in the classic Fairfax pattern which was first produced in 1910. This pattern was also produced by Gorham after they purchased the William B. Durgin Company in 1924. Most of the pieces in this set are hallmarked with the maker’s mark for Durgin, but several of the pieces were produced after 1924 and have Gorham hallmarks. The two smaller sized dinner knives are done in a pattern virtually identical to Durgin’s Fairfax pattern, but they were actually made by the English company, Birks. The largest of the dinner knives has a sterling silver handle and an old carbon steel blade. This blade will rust if left in water overnight or for any prolonged period of time. The knife should be cleaned within a few hours of use. It cannot go in the dishwasher. The other knives and the cake or pie server have sterling silver handles and stainless steel blades.
The set includes:
- 1 large dinner knife: 9 5/8 inches
- 2 smaller dinner knives or place knives: 9 1/8 inches
- 10 luncheon knives: 8 3/4 inches, 8 are monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
- 3 dinner forks: 7 7/8 inches, all are monogrammed with a C in script
- 12 luncheon forks: 7 3/16 inches, 8 are monogrammed with a C in Gothic script and 4 are monogrammed with a C in script
- 9 salad or dessert forks: 5 are 5 9/16 inches long and 4 are 6 3/16 inches long
- 12 teaspoons: 5 3/4 inches long, 4 are monogrammed with a C in Gothic script and 8 are monogrammed with a C in script
- 8 place, dessert, or oval soup spoons: 7 1/8 inches, 7 are monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
- 2 round soup spoons: 6 7/8 inches, both are monogrammed with a C in script
- 1 sauce or gravy ladle: 6 7/8 inches, monogrammed with a D in Gothic script
- 8 butter spreaders: 5 1/2 inches long, all are monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
- 1 lemon fork: 4 7/8 inches, monogrammed with an R in Gothic script
- 1 jelly spoon: 6 1/4 inches, monogrammed with an R in Gothic script
- 1 sugar spoon: 5 7/8 inches, monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
- 1 bouillon soup spoon: 5 1/4 inches, monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
- 1 cake or pie server: 10 inches, monogrammed with a C in Gothic script
Eight luncheon knives, 8 luncheon forks, 9 salad forks, 3 teaspoons, 1 place spoon, and the cake or pie server are marked with the maker’s mark for Gorham. The two smaller sized dinner knives are marked Birks Sterling on the handle and Birks Stainless on the blade. The other pieces are hallmarked with the maker’s mark for Durgin and Sterling. Some of the pieces are also hallmarked with retailer’s marks.
The condition is excellent. The set has some surface wear commensurate with age and light use, and the large dinner knife has some wear to the silver plating of the old carbon steel blade on the high points. This is minor. A couple of the luncheon knives have small dents on the ends of the handles, but this is not very noticeable. There are no other dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The weight is 2137.3 grams or 74.9 ounces. This does not include the weight of the knives and the cake or pie server because of their stainless steel blades.
This set comes with an optional, free, bonus box as seen in the photographs. The box is a felt lined wooden box. The box has surface wear but is effective in protecting the set against tarnishing. This box is free, and is not considered to be part of the value of this auction. If you do not want the box let us know and we can reduce shipping fees accordingly.
