On the title page is an inscription from Carolina Hospital to someone named Bill, dated January 1989.

"All of the writers in this anthology were born in Cuba; however, all left the island at a young age. Consequently, they had to develop their talents within two cultural and linguistic worlds: a private one and a public one.

One of the greatest risks taken by these Cuban American writers lies in their usage of English. Because most of these authors write primarily in English, they are automatically dismissed and excluded from anthologies and analysis of Cuban exile literature. However, it is a travisty to ignor these writers. First of all, they were born in Cuba, and most importantly, they consider themselves Cuban writers. Moreover, the texts of these writers demonstrate a strong legacy from the Cuban~Latin American cultural tradition, in addition to demonstrating a vital exile consciousness.

Grouping these writers in one text signifies a new direction, long overdue, for the reader and the critic of literature."
