Mostly writing the style of "hard boiled," Coxe a great friend of Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of Perry Mason.

In 1952 Coxe was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America.

His most popular characters are Kent Murdock and "Flashgun" Casey, both photographers for major New York newspapers, and private investigator Jack Fenner.
