Christmas in the Big House, Christmas in the Quarters, by Patricia C. McKissack and Frederick L. McKissack; illustrated by John Thompson; hardcover with dustjacket, Scholastic, copyright 1994, third printing; 9 x 11 picture book format with nice dustjacket, boards and pages;

It is Christmastime on a plantation in Virginia in 1859.  The Big House is decorated and glowing with elegance and beauty, there is an abundance of delicious food and hospitality.  But there is also talk of of raids, slave uprisings...war.

In the slave Quarters nearby there is no grandeur for the families who live in cramped one room cabins with dirt floors.  Yet, despite the harshness of their lives, there is celebration, dancing, singing, eating, some slaves who were sold off far away are allowed to visit for this one day.

Meticulous research, poignant story. Glossy pages, full page color illustrations, no marks, tears, stains, odors, book is in excellent condition with slightest indicators of any wear. Wonderful story and a great addition to any holiday tradition.
