Inherited from family art collector: thousands of original pieces and prints meticulously stored!
This engraving by Bernard Picart (French 1673-1733) is titled "Roger de Piles Nivernensis Eques." Text in the lower margin reads, "Benardus Picart fecit aqua forti 1704; Picart Romanus ex CPR." Approximate Dimensions: 11 1/8 x 7 3/4 inches, with 1/16th inch margins. This piece is on thickly woven paper, and is hinged to a presentation portfolio.
Image History: Handwritten text from the previous owner along the bottom of the presentation portfolio reads, "F.D. 1919," and may provide valuable authenticity or date of origin information. Otherwise, I am unaware if this piece is an original from the noted time period, or a reproduction from as late as the 1950's.
Image Condition: The image is in great condition and has only begun to fade lightly. On the back of the image, the previous owner's pen initials and ink stamp exist in the lower 1/3 of the page, but are not visible from the front of the piece.
Artist History: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French engraver, son of Etienne Picart, also an engraver. He was born in Paris and died in Amsterdam. He moved to Antwerp in 1696, and then spent a year in Amsterdam before returning to France at the end of 1698. After his wife died in 1708, he moved to Amsterdam in 1711 (later being joined by his father), where he became a Protestant convert and married again.
Most of his work was book-illustrations. His most famous work is Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde, appearing from 1723 to 1743. Jonathan I. Israel calls Cérémonies "an immense effort to record the religious rituals and beliefs of the world in all their diversity as objectively and authentically as possible", although he had never left Europe. He relied on accounts by those who had, and had access to a collection of Indian sculpture. The original French edition of "Cérémonies" comprises ten volumes of text and engravings.
