Synopsis
A retelling of the tale, set in medieval Paris, of Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bellringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and his struggles to save the beautiful gypsy dancer Esmaralda from being unjustly executed.
In medieval Paris, Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bellringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, struggles to save the gypsy dancer Esmeralda from being unjustly executed. Illustrated notes throughout the text explain the historical background of the story.
Victor Hugo's romance is set in the middle ages, largely in the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, where Quasimodo is the hunchbacked bellringer. Quasimodo silently loves a gypsy dancer named Esmeralda. She is accused of witchcraft and seeks refuge in the cathedral, where Quasimodo cares for her. But when she is executed in spite of his efforts, he throws her persecutor, the evil archdeacon Frollo, from the top of the cathedral.

Publisher's Note
Before the huge crowd that packed the cathedral square, Esmeralda stood between two executioners. Suddenly, Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre Dame, rushed at the executioners and felled them with his enormous fists. He snatched the gypsy girl in one arm and ran with her into the church. A moment later he appeared at the top of the bell tower. Holding the girl above his head, he showed her triumphantly to all of Paris wile his thunderous voice roared savagely to the sky: "Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Sanctuary!"
Unforgettable characters, a spellbinding plot, and a magnificent setting combine to create Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Enhanced by Tim Conrad's haunting illustrations, this classic tale is one of love, conflict, and spiritual truth in medieval Paris.

Industry reviews
"Hugo's characters...are unforgettable because they possess the elemental grandeur of myths and epics."
