Writer/director Tim Robbins' stunning and audacious look at the collision of the Depression era art world and politics centers around a mostly true story: the attempt to suppress a federally funded pro-labor musical by the leftist (and today little-known) composer Marc Blitzstein.
This soundtrack album combines incidental music in Blitzstein's best Kurt-Weill-goes-American style (courtesy of Robbins' brother David) as well as the original Blitzstein songs, mostly done in authentic '30s theater style. Exceptions include an astounding guitar/vocal assault on "Nickel Under the Foot" by P.J. Harvey, and an unlikely--but charming--duet between Eddie Vedder and CRADLE WILL ROCK co-star Susan Sarandon on "Croon Spoon."
