This is a very nice antique solid sterling silver baby spoon with a nursery rhyme theme. These spoons are great to collect. They are rarely perfect - people back 100 years or so ago actually used them! They are frequently found with both the handles and bowls bent to please the owner and user. They often have teeth marks. They are very cute and harken back to the old days when life was different.
Sterling silver is actually great for use, as it warms quickly to the touch and is antibacterial. I often give new sterling baby spoons as gifts and tell people to use them, not just leave them on a shelf.
This one has a nice floral handle, like several introduced by Baker-Manchester in 1900. What is interesting about this spoon is that, if you straightened the handle, the main face of the pattern would be underneath, which means it was made originally to be curled upward and over. We see this sometimes with curved-handle baby spoons, but not often.
The embossed bowl shows "Little Miss Muffet" in old time dress, sitting on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey. The big scary spider is just lowering himself beside her! A frightening scene, indeed!
It is a 3-1/4" curled-handle baby spoon.
No monograms or other engraving.
It is marked inside the handle with "Sterling" and has the old two birds flanking an M hallmark for Baker-Manchester, a popular maker.
It is in good condition with some light scratching and wear and tiny dings from normal use and handling, and some tarnish here and there.
