RARE Wonderful nautical memorabilia... AUTHENTIC 19C CHINESE junk ship DRAGON FIGUREHEAD

DESCRIPTION: Beautifully carved Dragon figure head, placed on the bow of a boat.
There are dealers who specialize in old Maritime / Nautical antiques, so you might want to direct questions to them, because we don't know much else, other than it is from our old Yankee New England Maine family estate--  The "oral stories" we've been told is that one of our past relatives traveled the globe (We suspect Great Aunt Bessie, 1888- 1983) and brought back many, many "souvenirs" and antiques -- and that this came back with her from China from an old Chinese Junk (boat) that was being taken apart for scrap.

In fact, it could be older: Great Great Grandfather Reuben Merrill was a clipper ship captain of the "Cumberland" - sailed the world for trade and commodities, Civil War era.  Could be something he acquired.  Wish it would tell us.

DIMENSIONS: appx 18" x 4"-6" depending on where you measure across the carving, the head is appx 10" long, forehead to snout.

CONDITION:   Really good condition considering its age, over 100 years.  There has been some separation of the head from the neck, but it shows the incredible workmanship and detail, and the 19th century construction and joinery.

You can see the original base wood, where obviously it broke off the boat, or was knocked off.

The Dragon is a powerful symbol in China, and there are Chinese who claim to be "Lung Tik Chuan Ren" (Descendants of the Dragon). Dragons are considered to be the divine mythical creature that brings with it ultimate abundance, prosperity and good fortune.  To have a dragon on the front of your boat would bring those things to the fisherman or ferryman.

Incredible detailed carving, the artisan put a lot of attention to the smallest details, right down to the individual scales.

Original paint.  some is worn, but the colors are still there.

Anyone who collects dragons, or maritime objects will LOVE this...  Would sell for hundreds at an antique store....

 PAYMENT:  We accept Paypal only.

There is a $1.00 handling fee for packing/supplies.
